Landscape Architect Sydney Style Solutions

A landscape architect Sydney is an individual involved in planning, design and direction of a landscape or garden in Sydney. Landscape Architecture on the other hand is the professional practice done by a landscape Architecture Sydney. The term landscape architect in general sometimes refers to individuals who are not officially designated or qualified for the job. Landscaping involves Gardening, designing, architecture, surveying and engineering of distinct spaces. Landscape architecture is a new profession and is not very rampant in other developing nations. Building architects are still largely commissioned nowadays for landscape architectural services.

A landscape architect Sydney is protected and licensed like in other states or countries. There are limitations imposed on people who are not licensed to practice the profession. The AILA or Australian institute of Landscape Architects says that a landscape architect Sydney researches, designs, plans and advises the stewardship, sustainability and conversation of the space’s development within the built environment. This definition was derived from the International Standard Classification of Occupations which is in International Labour Office in Geneva. To become a recognized landscape architect in the country, one must first obtain a degree accredited by AILA in landscape architecture.

A landscape architect Sydney must have finished two years or more, of a recognized professional practice who have been assessed and given full professional recognition by AILA. The typical work of a landscape architect Sydney involves the development and improvisation of theories, methods and policy for Landscape Design, planning, management and planning at local, national, multinational, and regional levels. They also develop plans and policies, monitor and implement proposals for recreation and conservation areas such as national parks. These architects develop and improve theories and methods aimed at promoting environmental awareness through planning, restoration, management, design and maintenance of cultural and historic parks, gardens, landscapes and sites.

A landscape architect Sydney plans, designs, manages, maintains and monitors aesthetic and functional layouts of built environment in suburban, urban and rural areas which includes public and private open spaces, gardens, plazas, burial grounds, parks, streetscapes, housing developments and memorials; tourist, industrial, commercial and educational complexes; sports grounds, botanic gardens, farms, zoos and recreation areas.

They also contribute to planning, functional and aesthetic design, location, maintenance and management of infrastructures like roads, wind farms, dams and other major developmental projects. Undertaking landscape assessments which include visual and environmental impact to inform new developments or prepare policies are also part of the work of a landscape architect Sydney.

A landscape architect Sydney also inspects sites to analyse factors like climate, flora and fauna, soil, subsurface and surface water and drainage. They also consult with clients to make recommendations about sequences of operations and methods of work for projects related to the environment and landscape. A landscape architect Sydney also identifies and develops solutions appropriate to the use and quality of the environment in suburban, urban and rural areas. They make designs; work with plans and drawings, specifications of work, time schedules and cost estimates, among many others.

The French landscape garden is a style of garden inspired by idealized Italian landscapes and the romantic paintings of Hubert Robert, Claude Lorrain and Nicolas Poussin, European ideas about Chinese gardens, and the philosophy of Jean-Jacques Rousseau. The style originated in England in the early eighteenth century and spread to France, where, in the late eighteenth and early nineteenth century, it gradually replaced the formal, symmetrical Garden la franaise.

Meto J. Vroom, a former professor of landscape architecture at UniversitAt Wageningen, defines and analyzes more than 250 terms, concepts, and objects. While the definitions convey the universally recognized meaning of the headwords, each essay briefly outlines a subject with a critical commentary and numerous commendations for further reading. Thus the lexicon serves to clarify important terms and expressions that designers use on a daily basis. More than that, however, it also constitutes a general introduction to the major themes of landscape design.

La Foce: A Garden and Landscape in Tuscany

La Foce: A Garden and Landscape in Tuscany

$57.2

The gardens and estate of La Foce constitute one of the most important and best kept early twentieth-century gardens in Italy. Amid 3,500 acres of farmland in the countryside near Pienza, with sweeping views of the Tuscan landscape, La Foce was the childhood dream garden of the late writer Marchesa Iris Origo. Passionate about the order and symmetry of Florentine gardens, Origo and her husband, Antonio, purchased the dilapidated villa in 1924, soliciting the help of English architect and family friend Cecil Pinsent to reawaken the natural magic of the property. Pinsent designed the structure of simple, elegant, box-edged beds and green enclosures that give shape to the Origos’ shrubs, perennials, and vines, and created a garden of soaring cypress walks, native cyclamen, lawns, and wildflower meadows. It is, by all accounts, a remarkable achievement. Today the garden is a place of unusual and striking beauty, a green oasis in the barren Siena countryside. Situated in the Val d’Orcia, a wide valley in southeastern Tuscany that seems to exist on a larger, wilder scale than the rest of the Tuscan landscape, it is run by Benedetta and Donata Origo, and is open to the public one day a week. "La Foce: A Garden and Landscape in Tuscany" is a contemplative, multifaceted study of the house, gardens, and estate of La Foce. It includes a historical essay and memoir by the daughter of La Foce’s creators, Antonio and Iris Origo, along with photographs, sketches, and a critical analysis of the gardens. The volume not only focuses on the beauty of the gardens themselves and their indisputable merit as fascinating works of landscape architecture but also sees them within the context of both the larger Tuscan topography and the wider landscape of geography and history. The book will be a delight to armchair travelers, trade and landscape architects, gardeners, and those interested in Tuscan culture.

The Genius of the Place: The English Landscape Garden 1620-1820

$41.99

A garden classic, "The Genius of the Place" reveals that the history of landscape gardening is much more than a history of design and style; it opens up a wide perspective of English cultural history, showing how landscape gardening was gradually transformed over two centuries into an art that has been widely imitated throughout Europe and North America. The English landscape garden is richly documented in this anthology. Over 100 illustrations accompany writings that range from Francis Bacon to Jane Austin; from the early 1600s, when Englishmen began to determine their own concept and form of the garden, through the first half of the eighteenth century when its distinctive feature emerged, to the heyday of the landscape garden under "Capability" Brown and the reactions to his pure formalism under Repton and Loudon in the 1800s. This edition contains a new introduction and bibliography covering the many developments in garden history during the last dozen years. John Dixon Hunt is Professor in the School of English and American Studies at the University of East Anglia and editor of the "International Journal of Garden History." Peter Willis, an architect, is reader in the History of Architecture at the University of Newcastle.

The Artful Garden: Creative Inspiration for Landscape Design

The Artful Garden: Creative Inspiration for Landscape Design

$25.98

"I want to put the mystery back into the heart of garden design, where it needs to be. It’s what lures you in through the gate, keeps you moving through the landscape, and fills you with excitement along the way. The sense of mystery is what turns a mere display of plants, paths, and ornaments into an adventure." –James van Sweden Guided by world-renowned landscape architect James van Sweden and horticulture expert Tom Christopher, any gardener can learn the secrets of the gardener’s art and absorb the essence of inspired garden design. In their gifted hands, creating your own perfect garden, with its own alluring mysteries, turns out to be not only easy but a delight. Whether it’s a ten-foot-square city terrace or a ten-acre expanse, the same principles apply: the intelligent use of positive and negative space, of form and scale, of light and shadow, of rough and smooth textures. Do you want a garden you can immerse yourself in? A garden you can smell and listen to as well as observe? An exuberant garden or a contemplative garden? In this elegantly written and visually stunning book, van Sweden reveals the secrets of famous gardens around the world and encourages you to find inspiration in the arts–in painting (from America’s classic regional artists to the abstract expressionists), music (from classical to jazz), sculpture, even dance. He introduces you to famous artists who share how their art has influenced the design of their own gardens, and teaches you to think not in terms of borders and beds or even paths and meadows but of a tapestry woven from sky, trees, rocks, vines, flowers, grasses, and space. Richly illustrated throughout with magnificent photographs, "The Artful Garden" both tells and shows, sharing with beginning and experienced gardeners a wealth of inspiration and practical help. "What’s my message?" van Sweden asks in conclusion. The wise answer: "Don’t squander the potential for surprise and wonder."" "This beautiful book guarantees everyone who reads it a priceless store of gardening wisdom.

Reading Zen in the Rocks: The Japanese Dry Landscape Garden

Reading Zen in the Rocks: The Japanese Dry Landscape Garden

$17.99

The Japanese dry landscape garden has long attracted–and long baffled–viewers from the West. While museums across the United States are replicating these "Zen rock gardens" in their courtyards and miniature versions of the gardens are now office decorations, they remain enigmatic, their philosophical and aesthetic significance obscured. "Reading Zen in the Rocks," the classic essay on the "karesansui" garden by French art historian Francois Berthier, has now been translated by Graham Parkes, giving English-speaking readers a concise, thorough, and beautifully illustrated history of these gardens. Berthier’s guided tour of the famous garden of Ryoanji (Temple) in Kyoto leads him into an exposition of the genre, focusing on its Chinese antecedents and affiliations with Taoist ideas and Chinese landscape painting. He traces the roles of Shinto and Zen Buddhism in the evolution of the garden and also considers how manual laborers from the lowest classes in Japan had a hand in creating some of its highest examples. Parkes contributes an equally original and substantive essay which delves into the philosophical importance of rocks and their "language of stone," delineating the difference between Chinese and Japanese rock gardens and their relationship to Buddhism. Together, the two essays compose one of the most comprehensive and elegantly written studies of this haunting garden form. "Reading Zen in the Rocks" is fully illustrated with photographs of all the major gardens discussed, making it a handsome addition to the library of anyone interested in gardening, Eastern philosophy, and the combination of the two that the "karesansui" so superbly represents. Praise for the French edition: "A small book of rare depth, remarkably illustrated, on one of the most celebrated and beautiful rock gardens of the monasteries of Kyoto."–"L’Humanite" "Through "Le Jardin de Ryoanji," Berthier teaches us to read the zen in the rocks, to discover the language offered by the garden at Ryoanji. Enigmatic, poetic, and disconcerting, an enriching journey through a work of art of surprising modernity, "Le Jardin de Ryoanji" is a work that will interest all the amateurs of Japanese art and Eastern philosophy."–"Lien Horticole"

Yard and Garden Makeovers: Your Guide to Creating a Beautiful, Logical Landscape

$5.98

Approaching landscape design with the philosophy that style and harmony are equally important, this book covers basic design concepts through photographs, plans, and insightful text on how to create striking yet practical landscapes. It also eschews mass-produced pavers, blocks, and garden art in favor of attractive and functional walkways and entrances to the home and garage that emphasize natural elements as part of the construction. Instructive before-and-after shots of home landscape makeovers illustrate how a drab landscape can be beautifully and logically improved to reflect the owners’ needs and tastes while adding zest and value to the home.

Gentlemen Gardeners: The Men Who Recreated the English Landscape Garden

Gentlemen Gardeners: The Men Who Recreated the English Landscape Garden

$22

The English love affair with the landscape garden reached its height in the eighteenth century, when the creation of some of our greatest gardens set a stylistic lead which Continental Europe was eager to follow. In this informed and entertaining book, Timothy Mowl reveals how this development in garden style came about through an interaction between the garden owners, who had a vision of what these gardens might become, and the professionals who had the expertise to realize this vision. Ideas, technologies, and discoveries were exchanged, and theories were absorbed, popularized, and then discarded, in a fascinating sequence of action and reaction. It was a mold-breaking, revolutionary period in garden history. Mowl takes the reader on a fascinating journey to the magnificent gardens at Chiswick, Stowe, Castle Howard, Painshill, Stourhead, and an astonishing host of lesser Edens, and casts a fresh and illuminating perspective on the great age of the English Arcadia.

The Place of Landscape: Concepts, Contexts, Studies

The Place of Landscape: Concepts, Contexts, Studies

$51.23

This volume explores the conceptual "topography" of landscape: It examines the character of landscape as itself a mode of place as well as the modes of place that appear in relation to landscape. Leading scholars from a range of disciplines explore the concept of landscape, including its supposed relation to the spectatorial, its character as time-space, its relation to indigenous notions of "country," and its liminality. They examine landscape as it appears within a variety of contexts, from geography through photography and garden history to theology; and more specific studies look at the forms of landscape in medieval landscape painting, film and television, and in relation to national identity. The essays demonstrate that the study of landscape cannot be restricted to any one genre, cannot be taken as the exclusive province of any one discipline, and cannot be exhausted by any single form of analysis. What the place of landscape now evokes is itself a wide-ranging terrain encompassing issues concerning the nature of place, of human being in place, and of the structures that shape such being and are shaped by it.

Landscape Gardening in Japan

Landscape Gardening in Japan

Landscape Gardening in Japan was first published in 1893 by Josiah Conder, a British architect, urban planner, and teacher, who had come to Japan in 1877 to serve as a professor of architecture at the forerunner of Tokyo University and as a consultant to the Ministry of Engineering. A man of wide interests, Conder was encouraged by the warm reception given his 1891 Flowers of Japan and the Art of Floral Arrangement to undertake a book on gardening. In preparing the present book, he relied not entirely on his own observations but consulted, and "freely borrowed from," some of the most reliable Japanese sources available at the time, the oldest dating to 1633. The resulting book is the product of a Western, Victorian perspective with access to Japanese authoritative texts. Conder’s study of the Japanese landscape garden led him to conclude that it represented universal qualities that could be applied to gardening anywhere. In addition to a discussion of these broader truths, the book is so finely detailed and so richly illustrated that it still serves today as a guide to modern garden-lovers, whether of a practical or a theoretical bent. The present volume combines the original study with an additional volume of photographs of famous gardens that was published shortly thereafter and entitled Supplement to Landscape Gardening in Japan. The interior of the book has been redesigned and the text newly set for easier reading and viewing. The book has a new Foreword by Azby Brown and an Afterword by Terunobu Fujimori, providing background information on Conder and putting his accomplishments into perspective. Jacket Illustration: Yokuon-en Zenzu (detail), National Diet Library. The Yokuon-en garden and villa was constructed by Matsudaira Sadanobu around 1794. (See Conder’s description in Chapter 1 under Yoku-on-En.) The present illustration is a copy of an original bird’s-eye view commemoratively painted in 1842 after the garden’s destruction by fire in 1829.

The Italian Garden

The Italian Garden

$66.6

Italian Renaissance gardens were the admiration of Europe and North America. They revived the classical art of garden making, as well as drawing on medieval literary traditions; but they also developed their own forms and styles, even when they began to borrow back ideas of landscape gardening from England in the late eighteenth century. But until the late nineteenth century Italy was a collection of different states, each of which developed its own kind of garden, subject to climate, situation and culture. It is this diversity that is explored here, in a series of ten essays, each focusing on one locale in order to draw out its special contribution to the Italian garden.

Gardens, Landscape, Vision - Ppr.

Gardens, Landscape, Vision – Ppr.

Islamic gardens, with their waterways and beds of plants and trees, are generally regarded as an earthly reflection of paradise. D. Fairchild Ruggles offers a new interpretation, contending that the palace garden was primarily an environmental, economic, and political construct. She discusses three aspects of medieval Islamic Spain: the landscape and agricultural transformation documented in Arabic scientific literature, the formation of the garden and its symbolism from the eighth through the fifteenth centuries, and the role of the gaze and the frame in the spatial structures through which sovereignty was constituted. Although the repertory of architectural and garden forms was largely unchanged from the tenth through the fifteenth centuries, Ruggles explains that their meaning changed dramatically. The royal palace gardens of Cordoba expressed a political ideology that placed the king above and at the center of the garden and, metaphorically, of his kingdom. This conception of the world began to falter in later centuries, but patrons dung to the forms and motifs of the golden age. Instead of creating new forms, artists at the Alhambra in Granada reworked and refined familiar vocabulary and materials. The vistas fixed by windows and pavilions referred not to the actual relationship of the king to his domain but rather to the memory of a once-expanding territory.

The Spiritual Landscape of Mark

The Spiritual Landscape of Mark

$12.95

“To read the Gospel of Mark is to embark on a journey–one that begins in a desert and ends with a boulder rolled away from the tomb. In between, Jesus teaches his disciples, calls them to journey and learn what it means to follow him, and guides them to Jerusalem, the scene of the Passion. In The Spiritual Landscape of Mark, Bonnie Thurston has adapted a retreat that she gave to the Society of the Sacred Cross at Tymawr Convent in Wales, thereby inviting all of us to embark on this spiritual journey. Mark’s gospel is full of places–desert, house, sea, valley, mountain, city, cross, garden–and the winding roads between them. Thurston’s prose invites us to go away to a quiet place and reflect awhile on what it means to be Jesus’ disciple, to follow him across the hard landscape. Along the way there will be glimpses of his glory–when he stills the storm and is transfigured on the mountain, when he heals the sick and feeds the hungry. Still, the primary lesson is the difficult way to which we are called, along with the great joy of knowing that Jesus has initiated the journey and leads us exactly where we need to go.”

Wonders of the Winter Landscape: Shrubs and Trees to Brighten the Cold-Weather Garden

$24.01

Although North America suffers through several dreary months of winter each year, this guide describes trees and shrubs that make the barren winter landscape a wonderland of texture and color. Part one of the book conveys the elegance of deciduous trees and shrubs with an extreme attention to detail–Persian parrotia offers twisted, sinuous branches and exfoliating bark; witch hazel presents distinctive yellow and orange straplike flowers; and beautyberry produces vivid purple berries the birds cannot resist. A shorter second section discusses the virtues of evergreens, both broadleaf and coniferous, and includes two useful appendices that cover evergreen care and list deer-resistant trees and shrubs.

For Agence Ter (Henri Bava, Michel Hoessler, Olivier Philippe), the ground itself is material. It obeys the laws of the natural sciences, holds water, has layers, and creates horizons, but it also harbors histories, founds culture, carries meaning, and creates space. The partners at Agence Ter decipher what lies hidden within it and in doing so furnish ideas for the identity of human living environments. In the process, they often cross territorial boundaries, whether it be in their park for the state garden show Aqua Magica on the border between Bad Oeynhausen und LAhne in Westphalia, whose concept is based on subterranean watercourses; in their development plan for the cities and towns of the Ile de Cayenne conurbation in French Guiana, whose logic is based on siltation, sedimentation processes, hydrology, and infrastructure. The partners of Agence Ter approach their territories with the genius of the engineer who develops landscapes according to the immanent ecologic of the site itself, and with the sensitivity of the landscape architect who designs land for people to experience.

This innovative book is the first comprehensive study of ancient Roman gardens to combine literary and archaeological evidence with contemporary space theory. It applies a variety of interdisciplinary methods including access analysis, literary and gender theory to offer a critical framework for interpreting Roman gardens as physical sites and representations. The Roman Garden: Space, Sense and Society examines how the garden functioned as a conceptual, sensual and physical space in Roman society, and its use as a vehicle of cultural communication. Readers will learn not only about the content and development of the Roman garden, but also how they promoted memories and experiences. It includes a detailed original analysis of garden terminology and concludes with three case studies on the House of Octavius Quartio and the House of the Menander in Pompeii, Pliny’s Tuscan garden, and Caligula’s Horti Lamiani in Rome. Providing both an introduction and an advanced analysis, this is a valuable and original addition to the growing scholarship in ancient gardens and will complement courses on Roman history, landscape archaeology and environmental history.

Japanese garden design, know to the West primarily in its traditional form, has undergone striking developments over the last decade. The Modern Japanese Garden is the first book to survey these contemporary Japanese gardens, presenting the designs in a way that is relevant to readers and their homes, whether it is in the East or West. Most of the locations have never been seen before in the West. In addition to important public gardens (such as that of the Tokyu Hotel Cerulean Tower, Shibuya) there are examples of some of the best modern domestic gardens. Among the more experimental gardens featured are a water garden with glass rocks; a mountain garden with flashing kinetic rods; a house with a vegetable roof garden; a rock plaza that pumps out mist; and a rock garden built inside a large inclined tube. With chapters exploring such themes as the influence on contemporary design of traditional Japanese cultural ideas, the miniaturization of landscape, sculpture, and texture, and the use by some garden designers of far more planting than was previously found in Japanese garden design, this inspirational book is required reading for all garden enthusiasts, especially those living in urban areas, as well as garden and landscape designers, and architects.

The shining red rocks on the outskirts of Colorado Springs are a most striking spectacle within the Garden Of The Gods. The huge red sandstone rock formations rise to a height of up to a hundred and fifty metres. These natural monuments are a reminder of the geological past of this extraordinary region situated at the foot of the Rocky Mountains.Protected by the rocky terrain the Ute Indians found this to be an ideal place in which to spend the winter months. The tribes’ winter camps existed there up until the late nineteenth century. A combination of three ecological systems, indigenous wildlife and vegetation provided a good source of nourishment for the Indians. The Ute not only used the Garden Of The Gods as a winter camp but also as a starting point for their journeys through the Ute Pass.Rain, wind, ice and melting snow have gradually created the elevated layers of rock in the Garden Of The Gods and have given it its unique appearance. The surrounding landscape enchants due to its spectacular beauty and small forests and meadows are in stark contract to this world of natural stone. The rocks in the Garden Of The Gods are silent witnesses of a unique geological development and a true wonder of nature! Source: Travel Video Store

The style was widely copied by other courts of Europe.

It’s what lures you in through the gate, keeps you moving through the landscape, and fills you with excitement along the way. The sense of mystery is what turns a mere display of plants, paths, and ornaments into an adventure.”                           —James van Sweden   Guided by world-renowned landscape architect James van Sweden and horticulture expert Tom Christopher, any gardener can learn the secrets of the gardener’s art and absorb the essence of inspired garden design. In this elegantly written and visually stunning book, van Sweden reveals the secrets of famous gardens around the world and encourages you to find inspiration in the arts—in painting (from America’s classic regional artists to the abstract expressionists), music (from classical to jazz), sculpture, even dance. Richly illustrated throughout with magnificent photographs, The Artful Garden both tells and shows, sharing with beginning and experienced gardeners a wealth of inspiration and practical help. “What’s my message?” van Sweden asks in conclusion. The wise answer: “Don’t squander the potential for surprise and wonder.” This beautiful book guarantees everyone who reads it a priceless store of gardening wisdom. From the Hardcover edition.

To Design Landscape: Art, Nature & Utility

To Design Landscape: Art, Nature & Utility

$51.86

To Design Landscape sets out a distinctively practical philosophy of design, in accessible format. Based on the notion that landscape design is a form-based craft addressing environmental processes and utility, Dee establishes a framework for approaching such craft with modesty and ingenuity, using the concept of "aesthetics of thrift." Employing numerous case studies-as diverse as Hellerup Rose Garden in Denmark; Bloedel Reserve, Bainbridge Island, USA; Rousham Gardens, Oxfordshire, UK and Tofuku-ji, in Kyoto, Japan – to illustrate her ideas, the book is a beautiful portfolio of Dee’s drawings, which are both evocative and to the point. The book begins with a ‘Foundations’ section, which sets out the basis of the approach. ‘Principles’ chapters then elaborate eleven significant considerations applicable to any design project, regardless of context and scale. Following on, ‘Strategies’ chapters reinforce the principles, and suggest further ways of designing, adaptable to different conditions. Dee ends with a focus on ‘Elements’, case studies and verb lists providing sources for the designer to consider how the components – vegetation, water, terrain, structures, soils, weather, and the sky – might be engaged, mediated and joined. Catherine Dee ‘s book is for all those who would craft landscape, from the gardener, to the professional landscape architect, to the student of design

The Chinese Garden: Garden Types for Contemporary Lanscape Architecture

The Chinese Garden: Garden Types for Contemporary Lanscape Architecture

$51.51

With their centuries-long development, the English landscape garden, the formal French garden, as well as Japanese and Chinese gardens constitute an unparalleled repository of design solutions familiar throughout the world. They are frequently drawn upon as reference works, but often in a piecemeal and haphazard fashion and from botanical or arthistorical vantage points. That is where the books of this new series come in. They present the various garden types from the perspective of contemporary landscape and garden design. Starting from the formidable beauty of the world’s most distinguished gardens, they point the way toward the essential compositional principles, the plants most commonly utilized and their most characteristic uses, and the possibilities for employing them in contemporary projects, thus providing readers with a rich source of inspiration for their own designs and creations. The panorama of The Chinese Garden stretches from the surviving historical gardens all the way to such modern examples as the garden at the Bank of China in Hong Kong (designed by I. M. Pei), Ai Weiwei’s Yiwu Riverbank Park, the Garden of Flowering Fragrance in the area of Los Angeles, California, and the Garden of Awakening Orchids in Portland, Oregon.

Japanese Garden

Japanese Garden

$65.84

Japanese gardens, that is, gardens in traditional Japanese style, can be found at private homes, in neighborhood or city parks, and at historical landmarks such as Buddhist temples, Shinto shrines and old castles. Some of the Japanese gardens most famous in the West, and within Japan as well, are dry gardens or rock gardens, karesansui. The tradition of the Tea masters has produced highly refined Japanese gardens of quite another style, evoking rural simplicity. In Japanese culture, garden-making is a high art, intimately related to the linked arts of calligraphy and ink painting. Since the end of the 19th century, Japanese gardens have also been adapted to Western settings. Japanese gardens were developed under the influences of the distinctive and stylized Chinese gardens. One of the great interest for the historical development of the Japanese garden, bonseki, bonsai and related arts is the c. 1300 Zen monk Kokan Shiren and his rhymeprose essay Rhymeprose on a Miniature Landscape Garden. The tradition of Japanese gardening was historically passed down from sensei to apprentice. In recent decades this has been supplemented by various trade schools.

The Wild Garden

The Wild Garden

$28.15

William Robinson’s revolutionary book, "The Wild Garden," envisioned an authentically naturalistic approach to gardening that is more vital today than ever before. First published in 1870, The Wild Garden evolved through many editions and remained in print through the remainder of the author’s lifetime (1838–1935). In the book, Robinson issued a forceful challenge to the prevailing style of the day, which relied upon tender plants arranged in rigidly geometrical designs. In sharp contrast, Robinson advocated for the use of hardy, locally adapted native and exotic plants arranged according to local growing conditions. Robinson’s vision was inspired by his first-hand observations of natural habitats in Europe and North America, and he put his ideas into practice in his own garden at Gravetye Manor in West Sussex. "The Wild Garden" was ground-breaking and hugely influential in its day, and is stunningly relevant to twenty-first century gardeners and landscape stewards seeking to adopt sustainable design and management practices. In addition to the complete original text and illustrations from the fifth edition of 1895, this expanded edition includes new chapters and 125 color photographs by award-winning photographer and landscape consultant Rick Darke. His new material places wild gardening in modern context, underscoring Robinson’s importance in the evolution of ecological design and illustrating an inspiring diversity of contemporary wild gardens. The potent combination presented here makes this new edition of a timeless classic an essential resource for all who wish to know how we have arrived at our present understanding of gardens and what opportunities lie ahead. As will be immediately clear to anyone who leafs through this book, Robinson’s urgent message continues to resonate.

Making the Modern Garden

Among the designers in the book are Fernando Caruncho, Peter Walker, Kathryn Gustafson, and Vladamir Sitta; different types of gardens include roof gardens, courtyards, urban and country gardens, and dramatic landscapes. Bradley-Hole also reviews the ever-changing palette of plants used in the modernist garden as well as materials and landscape features. A frequent collaborator, clay animation artist Bruce Bickford ostensibly made only one short film which represents unmitigated Bickford: PROMETHEUS’ GARDEN. Based on Greek mythology and made entirely under his sole control, the film unfolds in a surreal stream-of-consciousness and features some of the most bizarre, beautiful, and jarring images imaginable. control.Inspired by the Greek myth of Prometheus, a Titan who created the first mortals from clay and stole fire from the gods, Prometheus’ Garden immerses viewers in a cinematic universe unlike any other. The dark and magical images of this haunting film unfold in a dreamlike stream of consciousness revealing an unlikely cast of clay characters engaged in a violent struggle for survival. Like all Bickford films, Prometheus’ Garden defies description and simply must be experienced. In Clay Animation, film scholar Michael Frierson writes: Bickford offers us a visionary landscape, a hallucinogenic retreat into magical settings where figure and ground may transform into the other at any moment, enchanted settings in which modern technocrats are easy villains and nature is under siege. Bickford is an underground artist who has mystified animation critics and inspired generations of animators, while somehow eluding fame. He has been described as the world’s only outsider artist working in the medium of animation. He has been recognized as a genius by Frank Zappa and countless other iconoclasts. One thing is certain: Bickford is a true original. In his collaborations with Frank Zappa in the 1970s, Bickford relinquished creative control of his work (which was edited and scored by Zappa). Consequently, Prometheus’ Garden is Bickford’s most comprehensive and least compromised vision.Source: Microcinema

Garden Primitives

Garden Primitives

$4.98

These stories open puzzle boxes of intensity; some shut after just a glimpse; in others you can hear the screaming as you turn the page. Sosin’s stories always deliver the memorable image, always attempt to decode desire. They pull the rug out from under your expectations, whether it’s a notion of what a story should be or a sudden shift in perspective that blasts the landscape wide open.-Patricia Weaver Francisco The stories in "Garden Primitives" range from still to explosive, the language from poetic and sensual to coarse. What is common among them is a passionate allegiance to both the heart and the intellect. Sosin’s characters are at once base and complex as we see the continuous motion of their inner lives, mingle and withdraw from the external world. Revealed are tangles of perception and rationalization, driven by desire and fear. "Garden Primitives" is interested in questions, in pain and pleasure, in beauty and sharp edges. The cinematic eye of Sosin’s roving narrators leads us through the snowy and suburban decay of a family on a perfect winter night; into the narrow but honest mind of a farmer being bowled over by urban sprawl; on the beach, where a woman’s life becomes hyper-focused on the survival of a turtle nest; around a campfire on a north woods vacation where the gaps between parents and children, friends and lovers widen; and through gardens both vegetable and glassed where the language is as fertile as what grows there. "Garden Primitives" is a debut to a voice and vision concerned with the Eden in and around us, and with our clumsiness and grace in the face of the unknown. Danielle Sosin received a Minnesota State Arts Board Fellowship in 1999. One of her short stories, "What Mark Couldn’t See, " was read on National Public Radio’s Selected Shorts. "Garden Primitives" is her first book-length publication. She lives in Saint Paul, Minnesota.

Drawing on his intensive studies of some 30 influential European projects, Udo Weilacher presents a panorama of the most significant developments since the publication of his groundbreaking work Between Landscape Architecture and Land Art in 1996. Examples of the cooperation between landscape designers and architects are given special attention in case studies taken from the United Kingdom, the Netherlands, France, Spain, Denmark, Germany and Switzerland. In addition, US landscape designer Kathryn Gustafson, artists such as Dani Karavan, and the architectural theorist Charles Jencks are featured, along with their European works.

Garden of Dreams

Garden of Dreams

$14.38

Using a tonally free but conservative language, David Maslanka writes music that is evocative and gentle-spirited, although occasionally his gestures drift dangerously close to an imitation of John Adams. The composer’s devotion to Bach’s chorales, and his sometimes veiled, sometimes explicit use of them may account for the serenity that characterizes much of his work. A Child’s Garden of Dreams is a wonderful name for a piece of music, and its music delivers in its conjuring of hazy, childlike dreamscapes, although the tranquility of most of the music raises the question: where are the nightmares? Unfortunately, the composer has attached explicitly visual dream images collected by Jung to the movements, and they prove a distraction more than a complement to the musical imagery. They may have been useful in triggering the composer’s imagination, but the specificity of Jung’s descriptions creates certain expectations in the listener, who then finds him or herself in the position of evaluating the music’s effectiveness at matching the detailed descriptions, rather than simply listening. Maslanka’s fourth Symphony inhabits a similar musical landscape, but as a symphony it appropriately offers more contrasts and a broader spectrum of moods, including an exuberant finale. It includes a playful section of jazzed-up Bach that sounds silly and out of place, but apart from that, the symphony is attractive and colorfully orchestrated. The Dallas Wind Symphony, under Jerry Junkin, plays with precision, conviction, and high energy. ~ Stephen Eddins, Rovi

The Welcoming Garden: Designing Your Own Front Garden

The Welcoming Garden: Designing Your Own Front Garden

$7.48

Renowned garden designer Gordon Hayward’s newest book focuses on one major principle: creating front-yard gardens that will inspire and invite, transforming neighborhoods and encouraging people to create compelling spaces in which to relax, visit with neighbors, and enjoy a natural space. A front garden should welcome, enliven, enrich, and engage. Traditional "foundation planting"–that cliche that means glomming a few evergreen shrubs against the front foundation of the house and then running lawn from it down to the sidewalk or street–is a thing of the past. Hayward offers a step-by-step approach that starts by helping people find their "Big Idea," then guides the homeowner through the process of making all the smaller decisions. He also introduces fundamental garden-design principles, illustrated throughout the book with beautiful photography and line drawings, allowing homeowners to effectively apply the ideas no matter where or what type of climate they live. Feast on these lush photos with an open mind, you’ll come away with an endless supply of ideas. Chapters include: How to Look at Garden Images The Driveway, Cars and the Front Garden The Path to the Front Door A Lot of Lawn, A Little Lawn? Gardens Between House and Sidewalk Fencing, Walls and Gates Sitting Areas in the Front Garden Gordon Hayward holds degrees from Wesleyan University and began gardening in the 1970s. In 1984, he turned to the work of garden design, lecturing, and writing full time. He consults throughout the Northeast for residential clients, their architects, and builders. He is the author of several books, including The Intimate Garden: Twenty Years and Four Seasons in Our Garden, Garden Paths: Inspiring Designs and Practical Projects, and Your House, Your Garden: A Foolproof Approach to Garden Design, as well as a variety of articles for Horticulture Magazine. Hayward is a certified member of the Association of Professional Landscape Designers.

Best Trees for Your Garden

$3.48

"The ultimate gardener’s guide to trees." Of all the planting decisions a gardener makes, the choice of trees is the most important. The book also considers the choice of trees in relation to the architecture of the house or adjacent buildings, the surrounding landscape, and the rest of the garden. Inspirational and informative, Best Trees for Your Garden offers practical and proven ideas for placing trees to best effect and using them creatively with other trees, shrubs, and plants. It also includes extensive advice for planting, pruning and maintaining garden trees. The second half of the book is an extensive directory of the best garden trees. Hidcote: The Making of a Garden

$44.71

Hidcote, an internationally revered English garden, was created in the Cotswolds by Major Lawrence Johnston, a Henry James American whose circle of friends included Edith Wharton and Bernard Berenson. The most influential English garden of the twentieth century, Hidcote is recognized as the model for most "English-style" gardens and was recently restored. First published in 1989, the book was the first biography of Johnston; for this revised and enlarged edition Clarke, garden editor at Traditional Home magazine, and the author of 15 books on landscape history and gardening, has collected much new, original material that illuminates the creation of the garden and presents Johnston’s life in the context of the period that set the seal on England’s preeminence in garden design and plantsmanship. In addition to seasonal lists of plants closely associated with Hidcote, the book also features new information about Johnston’s other major work, Serre de la Madonne in the south of France, now a French national monument.

Avant Gardeners: 50 Visionaries of the Contemporary Landscape

Avant Gardeners: 50 Visionaries of the Contemporary Landscape

$31.67

In recent years, garden and landscape design has witnessed a burgeoning of new ideas. Recent garden plans have embraced the latest thinking in science and materials, and have appropriated ideas from related disciplines such as architecture and product design. One indication of the rise in popularity of these designs has been the growing number of conceptual garden festivals, which have become a premier showcase for new concepts. This book profiles the work of fifty innovative designers through informative texts, photographs, and plans. Essays explore the underlying principles of these highly individual approaches and show how a new generation has rejected the naturalistic tradition of Western garden design, favoring instead the influences of Modernism, Postmodernism, Pop Art, and Land Art.

The Art and Craft of Garden Making

The Art and Craft of Garden Making

$54.77

In 1901, Thomas Mawson (1861-1933) first published ‘The Art and Craft of Garden Making’, now regarded as the foundation of modern landscape architecture. By 1926, it had been reprinted five times. It is this book which revealed Mawson’s inspiration and gave a name to the style of work achieved by Edwin Lutyens & Gertrude Jekyll. Thomas Mawson was a prolific & influential designer who became the first president of the Institute of Landscape Architects (now Landscape Institute) in 1929. His design practice based in Windermere, in the English Lake District, prospered owing both to a wealthy clientele – brought to the area by the railway network – and to his obvious talent for design which blended architecture and horticulture. Thomas’s prolific and successful career included commissions on Graythwaite Hall, Langdale Chase, Holehird, Brockhole, Holker Hall and at Rydal Hall in 1909. He also had a considerable number of projects abroad including in Canada, America and mainland Europe.

Our Shadow Garden

Our Shadow Garden

$16.16

When a beloved grandmother becomes ill and is no longer able to be in the sun, her granddaughter is inspired to create a garden she can enjoy. She and Poppa work together in secret to transform Nana’s garden into a night blooming oasis, a place where she can be with the creatures and plants that bring her happiness. As they work with seeds, trowels and wheelbarrows to cultivate moonflowers, star jasmine, and other luminous, pale, sweet-smelling plants, they discover the sensory beauty of the garden at night. They learn to listen for the call of the cicadas, the songs of the night-jars, and the scampering of a family of raccoons. Everyone in the family is enchanted by the healing power of the "shadow" garden, a feast for all the senses and a true gift of love. Gardening facts and tips accompany the vibrant illustrations, which were created by children who are battling cancer. When Nana becomes ill and cannot be out in her sunny garden anymore, her grandchild secretly goes to work, enlisting help from Poppa to create a beautiful, night-time garden. Written by landscape designer Cherie Foster Colburn, "Our Shadow Garden "introduces children to the wonders of nocturnal plants and creatures as it reminds us all of the healing joys in nature. Recipient of the Southern Writers Literary Award, this beautiful book with informative educational sidebars is illustrated by children in treatment at M.D. Anderson Cancer Center and 100% of the proceeds return to their Children’s Art Project.

Driving Germany: The Landscape of the German Autobahn, 1930-1970

Driving Germany: The Landscape of the German Autobahn, 1930-1970

$37.51

Hitler’s autobahn was more than just the pet project of an infrastructure-friendly dictator. It was supposed to revolutionize the transportation sector in Germany, connect the metropoles with the countryside, and encourage motorization. The propaganda machinery of the Third Reich turned the autobahn into a hyped-up icon of the dictatorship. One of the claims was that the roads would reconcile nature and technology. Rather than destroying the environment, they would embellish the landscape. Many historians have taken this claim at face value and concluded that the Nazi regime harbored an inbred love of nature. In this book, the author argues that such conclusions are misleading. Based on rich archival research, the book provides the first scholarly account of the landscape of the autobahn. Thomas Zeller is an associate professor at the University of Maryland, College Park, where he teaches the history of technology, environmental history, and science and technology studies. He is the author of Strasse, Bahn, Panorama (2002) and has co-edited the volumes How Green Were the Nazis? Nature, Environment, and Nation in the Third Reich (2005), Germany’s Nature: Cultural Landscapes and Environmental History (2005), The World Beyond the Windshield: Roads and Landscapes in the United States and Europe (2008) and Rivers in History: Perspectives on Waterways in Europe and North America (2008). His current research project, consuming Landscapes, has been supported by the National Science Foundation, the John W. Kluge Center atthe Library of Congress, and the Program in Garden and Landscape Studies at Dumbarton Oaks.
