How can I build a garden with walls-back yard has steep drop?
I have the idea in my head- I need a flower bed/garden for the back part of my yard which has a steep drop off. I want to build something with wood or cheap materials so the back of the garden doesnt slip off the “cliff”(as i like to call it) This is going to be used not only to plant flowers, but to aid in stuff such as my daughters soccer balls falling off the cliff. What ideas do you have? Thanks in advance
I had to build steps and retaining walls on my slopes. I used cinder blocks: cement blocks that are rectangular with holes in the center. I put the cinder blocks where I wanted, dug into the ground to flatten for placement and stacked how high I wanted, then I anchored the blocks by pounding 3 to 4 foot rebar in the center of the block into the ground, leaving none above the top of the block. I then filled the holes with gravel. This is inexpensive and works well.
You could actually hang landscape netting on poles to keep you daughter’s soccerballs corralled.

Garden In The Sky $19.18 Mayumi is a classically trained pianist and composer with an extensive background as a performer both in her native Japan and in the United States, where she currently resides. Her debut album Garden in the Sky is a collection of heartfelt original compositions, reflecting a strong influence from the Romantic and Impressionist eras. Most of the pieces feature delicate interactions between piano and synthesizer, with much use of water imagery and angelic voices. Stone Garden $11.98 Stone Garden hailed from a state one could assume was among the last touched by the chemical stimulant-inspired revolution in rock music in the ’60s. But you wouldn’t be able to tell that from Stone Garden. Cobbled together from live and studio recordings made between 1969 and 1971, the reissue collects virtually every available note by the pack of Idaho teens, including both sides of their lone, extremely rare 45 (“Oceans Inside Me”/”Stop My Thinking”). Aside from that single, all the tracks remained unreleased until appearing as a superbly packaged 1998 Rockadelic LP, reproduced in its entirety on this Gear Fab CD. So is it worth all the archival fuss? Mostly, yes, it really is. Stone Garden is an always blistering and often thrilling racket that splits the difference between the plundering depths of hard rock and the mind-excursion highs of psychedelia (or, more precisely, acid rock), carving out a nifty Western patch of its own. A heady trick for a group of boys from the potato state in the year of Woodstock, and, if dated in minor ways, still body-rattling music decades after the fact. There is some dense riffage (the re-recorded version of “Oceans,” “It’s a Beautiful Day,” an awesome “Woodstick”) that comes as close to proto-heavy metal shredding as anything else recorded in or around 1969 (that includes Steppenwolf, Black Sabbath, Iron Butterfly, and Blue Cheer), and the band had both an affinity and knack for scintillating, dual-guitar electric blues (“Stop My Thinking”), although the album’s sole outright misstep, “SF Policeman Blues,” apes early Grateful Dead a little too closely. But there is plenty of consciousness-expanding, detail-intriguing, and ominous melodic shifts, nifty but queasy coats of echo, Zappa-esque avant-garde effects (“Bastard”), and surprisingly mature and hip lyrics — even if the performances are not exactly nuanced. The Garden of Love $16.99 This one-off disco outing was recorded by Don Ray, an arranger who is best known for his work with disco maestros like Alec Costandinos and Cerrone (who produced this outing and also co-wrote many of the songs). It is a slick, ornate slab of Eurodisco that infuses its ornate orchestrations and pulsating rhythms with a layer of Kraftwerk-style programmed synthesizers. Garden Of Love is best known for the two club classics it produced: “Got To Have Loving” is a relentless dance track that alternates pounding rhythms with staccato bursts of horns and tribal drum breaks straight off a glam rock record while “Standing In The Rain” is a hypnotic midtempo track that pushes the programmed synthesizers to the forefront and effectively contrasts a horn-laden chorus with ethereal synthesizer-dominated instrumental breaks. Both songs got extensive exposure in discos at the time and remain cult favorites among disco fans today. Beyond those tracks, Garden Of Love is a mixed bag: everything is suitably slick and well-performed but the songs lack memorable melodies and hooks. For instance, “Midnight Madness” takes a chant and runs it into the ground for nearly six minutes. Other songs just feel like the loose-limbed jams with overdubbed solos from the session musicians (“Body And Soul” and the title track). The record’s nadir is the finale “My Desire,” an overlong torch song with a self-conscious “lounge lizard” vocal that is too campy to be taken seriously. The professionalism of Garden Of Love may satisfy Eurodisco completists but casual dance music fans will be better off picking up this album’s classics on a disco compilation. ~ Donald A. The Gutter and the Garden $11.98 It seems unfair to bring up R.E.M. every time a band hails from Athens, GA, but there really must be something in the water. “Seven Years,” the beautiful opener on the Lovers’ sophomore release, The Gutter and the Garden, may sound like a lost track from the Automatic for the People sessions, but the unique voice behind it owes more to Chrissie Hynde than Michael Stipe. Bandleader and wordsmith Carolyn Hart Berk — a Boston and Athens native — writes lonely tales of heartbreak, lost opportunity, and homespun despair that carry the softest glimmer of hope. Her slightly off-key timbre and breathy, sometimes volatile delivery add an emotional depth to arrangements that are already immersed in a sea of pastoral gloom. Her gift for imagery is striking, allowing lyrics that would otherwise come off as pompous — “My darling your gums are soft as rhododendron buds” — seem innocent and wistful, as if the narrator were merely thinking aloud. There is a sameness to the record that renders portions forgettable; the reverb-drenched production works for a while, but tunes begin to drift into Mazzy Star land, especially on “Kid Quiet” and “Your Handwriting.” These are minor gripes though, as the Lovers are miles better than many of their contemporaries. But others are more of a democracy, where each member pulls his own weight, so to speak. An example of the latter approach is certainly the L.A. quintet Irving. On their second full-length overall, 2006′s Death in the Garden, Blood on the Flowers, it’s sometimes hard to tell that it’s the same group throughout, since the mic seems to be continually passed among the bandmembers. But common musical threads run through the whole album (alt-pop psychedelia), and like some of the bands that they have played alongside — Franz Ferdinand, Arcade Fire — Irving aren’t afraid to show their appreciation of past new wave masters. Television-like guitar work comes into play on “She’s Not Shy,” while “Jen, Nothing Matters to Me” sounds very similar to vintage Cure (especially “Just Like Heaven”). Additionally, tracks like “I Want to Love You in My Room” bring to mind such late-’90s lo-fi Velvet Underground worshipers as the Dandy Warhols and the Brian Jonestown Massacre. A World Without Love/I Don’t Want to See You Again $15.98 These two LPs combined on one CD (with one bonus track) show off the duo’s strong and weak points at once. Peter & Gordon did good Beatlesque songs, although they couldn’t really compete with the real article without the occasional outside song like “A World Without Love” or “I Go to Pieces” coming their way. And they did all right, if not exceptionally well, by folk-style numbers such as “Pretty Mary” and “Willow Garden,” on which they compare favorably with the Everly Brothers. But when they do blues (“My Babe,” “Trouble in Mind”), they sound plain silly, and pretty lightweight when they cover songs like “Lucille” as well. Additionally, they do the occasional over-orchestrated number that breaks the spell altogether. Basically, they couldn’t make up their minds whether they wanted to be the acoustic duo following the footsteps of the Beatles, the mid-’60s answer to the Everly Brothers, or the successors to the Springfields (without anything resembling Dusty’s big voice). At its best, their stuff made for pleasant memories on the radio, and this 23-song set is not bad music; P&G were far bigger and more successful in America (where being British was a valuable commodity right into the end of 1965) than England.
