Brunswick Gardens $6.29 Like the great Victorian novelists whose mantle she wears with such distinction Anne Perry creates a rich and intimate world and fills it with remarkably vivid characters who experience the majesty–and shame–of the British Empire at its brilliant zenith. Now in Brunswick Gardens she explores the controversial birth of a philosophy that enflamed fiery debate–and possibly murder. A century ago Charles Darwin’s revolutionary theory of evolution rocked the civilized world and the outraged Anglican church went on the warpath against it. In a mansion in London’s affluent Brunswick Gardens the battle is intense as that most respected clergyman the Reverend Ramsay Parmenter is boldly challenged by his beautiful assistant Unity Bellwood–a "new woman" whose feminism and aggressive Darwinism he finds appalling. When Unity three months pregnant tumbles down the Parmenter staircase to her death Thomas Pitt commander of the Bow Street police station is virtually certain that one of the three deeply devout men in the house committed murder. Could it have been the Reverend Parmenter his handsome curate or his Roman Catholic son? Powerful forces demand that the scandalous matter be cleared up immediately. But Pitt and his clever wife Charlotte refuse to settle for less than the truth . . . and justice. Like all Anne Perry’s novels Brunswick Gardens translates great moral issues into deeply moving human dramas. Perhaps the most psychologically penetrating book she has written it is a distinguished addition to her acclaimed body of work. From the Hardcover edition. |

Coventry Rust Victorian Garden Chime $74 Tuned to the peaceful patterns of Gregorian chant, this chime combines the artistry and sounds of the Victorian era in one superb chime. The Victorian Garden Chime – Coventry, Rust recognizes a time when craftsmen created lavish metalwork which decorated buildings and gardens. It also offers a nod to the church, which was an important part of everyday life during the Victorian period. The intricate design of this chime delights the eye and the rust finish offers a natural beauty that warms up the steel elements with an earthy, brown color and an interesting, weathered texture. -8 rust finished steel tubes. |

Buckingham Palace Gardens: A Novel $6.29 Anne Perry’s Charlotte and Thomas Pitt mysteries are perhaps the best loved of all her Victorian bestsellers, luring us into the multilayered richness of London, from the great mansions and secluded drawing rooms to the city’s festering slums. Now, in her most mesmerizing novel yet, she invites us to a house-party at Buckingham Palace. The Prince of Wales has asked four wealthy entrepreneurs and their wives to the palace to discuss a fantastic idea: the construction of a six-thousand-mile railroad that would stretch the full length of Africa. But, alas, the prince’s gathering proves disastrous when the mutilated body of a prostitute hired for a late-night frolic (after the wives have retired to bed) turns up among the queen’s monogrammed sheets in a palace linen closet. With great haste, Thomas Pitt, brilliant mainstay of Special Services, is summoned to resolve the crisis. The Pitts’ cockney maid, Gracie, is also recruited-to pose as a palace servant and listen in on the guests’ conversations, scan their bedrooms, and scrutinize their troubled faces for clues to hidden rivalries and attachments that could have lead to murder. If Pitt and Gracie fail to find out who brutally murdered the young woman-as seems increasingly likely-Pitt’s career will be over, and the scandal may just cause the monarchy to fall. With a cast of wonderful characters, among them the gentle Princess of Wales, and a twisting plot that takes us into the hidden world of the royal family, Anne Perry probes deeply the hearts of men and women ensnared by their own emotions. Never has this distinguished novelist told a story with more truth and passion. From the Hardcover edition. |

Gardens $13.58 Though Gardens hail from the greater Detroit area, if they decided to move to Austin or Brooklyn, judging from the sound of their debut self-titled record, they’d fit right in. The trio has the look of Brooklyn with their oversized glasses and garish shirts, but more importantly, they share a reverb-y clatter that is standard BK issue. Their snotty attitude and wiry guitar attack is straight Texas, though you could also throw a little Tennessee into that equation. There’s barely any Detroit in the mix, though a cast of Motor City heroes (like Warren Defever of His Name Is Alive and Ko Melina of the Dirtbombs) are on hand to help out. Sounding like the city you hail from isn’t really all that important, except as a marketing tool, though (and most importantly) the band combine their geographical and sonic influences into something that sounds pretty fresh. The production is focused but still loose, the songs are hooky but not overly structured, and the performances are energetic and tossed-off sounding at the same time. It’s an appealing approach that really takes off when the songs are super good. About half the record fits this bill. On tracks like the catchy-as-get-out “Maze Time,” the alternately slow-grooving and slow-grinding “Ideas to Use,” or the rocked-out “Staring at a Line is Not Always Fine,” the band comes very close to hitting on all cylinders. The rest of the album either rushes by in a wave of snarl and snark, or shambles past like a shaggy dog with nowhere important to go. No matter what, though, it’s an engaging listen, and Gardens ends up being pretty much all you need from a debut; an attempt to find a unique sound, a handful of sticky tunes, a bunch of energy and fun. Give these guys another record or two to really get going, and they might have people talking about a Detroit sound the same way people talk about Austin or Brooklyn. ~ Tim Sendra, Rovi |

In the Gardens of Impressionism $19.99 From Manet’s earliest depictions of the Tuileries Gardens in Paris to Monet’s late waterlilies painted at Giverny, the Impressionists had an ongoing love affair with gardens. As places of rest, relaxation, and beauty, gardens were the Impressionist subject par excellence. This beautifully illustrated volume is the first consideration of this beloved theme in the Impressionists’ work. Here the artists’ fascination with gardens, parks, and flowers is explored in the context of the contemporary craze for horticulture and the changing political and cultural landscape in France. Drawing on archival sources such as horticultural journals as well as literature, poetry, and correspondence, the book describes how gardens, simultaneously “modern” and imbued with nostalgia, were central to the Impressionists’ discovery of their distinctive plein-air (out-of-doors) style. At the same time, by bringing to life the 19th-century tradition of floral symbolism and exploring how it infiltrated the work of key Impressionists, the book gives familiar works radical new interpretations. This vital contribution to our understanding of the Impressionist world is sure to delight art and gardening enthusiasts alike. |

Disco Gardens $15.98 Uptown Festival was Shalamar’s first album, but Disco Gardens was Shalamar’s first worthwhile album. To say that there was a world of difference between the two might be an understatement. Much of Uptown Festival had a robotic, impersonal quality, and it was obviously the work of a manufactured studio act. But when Shalamar introduced its Jody Watley/Jeffrey Daniels/Gerald Brown lineup on its second album, Disco Gardens, it started feeling like an honest-to-God group with a real identity. This decent-to-excellent album had a pearl of a hit single in “Take That to the Bank,” and almost as appealing are the irresistibly funky “Tossin’, Turnin’, Swingin’” (which should have been a hit single as well) and the catchy “Shalamar Disco Gardens.” Although Howard Hewett had yet to join the group, Shalamar had developed a recognizable soul-pop sound. Disco Gardens turned out to be Brown’s only album with Shalamar, and in 1978, the arrival of his replacement, Mr. Hewett, would be the icing on Shalamar’s cake. ~ Alex Henderson, Rovi |

Gardens Of Delight $9.19 The Gardens of Delight brochure promises the opportunity to visit some of the most beautiful and enchanting gardens in the Lake Como area of Italy. For Lucy, the chance to go to Italy offers more than just gardens. Lake Como is where her father lives and the last time she saw him was when she was just a teenager. Recently married Helen and her wealthy husband have just moved into the Old Rectory. With her husband spending so much time away from home, Helen throws herself into caring for the garden that was the pride and joy of its previous owner. But Helen needs help – and friends – and so decides to take the plunge and join the local Garden Club. Conrad isn’t the least bit interested in gardening. Widowed for five years, his life revolves around work and humouring Mac, his curmudgeonly elderly uncle who lives with him, and who has expressed a desire to go on the Gardens of Delight tour. But only if Conrad will accompany him. Reluctantly, Conrad agrees. ‘Anything for a peaceful life,’ he concedes. But a peaceful life is the last thing any of them are in for… |

Gardens of Stone $12.7 Set in Washington D.C. during the Vietnam War era, Gardens of Stone concentrates on the trials and tribulations of the Arlington National Cemetery home guard. James Caan plays career soldier Sgt. Clell Hazard, who has come to the sad conclusion that Vietnam is unwinnable and that America should withdraw as soon as possible. His attitude is contrasted to that held by Private Jackie Willow (D.B. Sweeney), who wants nothing more in life than to go into battle for his country. Though Hazard cannot officially dissuade Willow from this yearning, he pulls a few surreptitious strings to change the lad’s mind, including encouraging a renewed romance between Jackie and his former girlfriend Rachel (Mary Stuart Masterton). After so many big-budgeters, Coppola determined that Gardens would be a deliberately small picture, concentrating on personalities rather than opulence; the director’s father, Carmine Coppola, supplied the music, while Peter Masterton and Carlyn Glynn, the real-life parents of Mary Stuart Masterton, play Mary’s on-screen dad and mom. Gardens of Stone was adapted by Ronald Bass from the novel by Nicholas Proffitt. ~ Hal Erickson, Rovi |

Gardens & Villa $11.98 After recording in Starfucker’s home city of Portland, Oregon, Gardens & Villa released their debut album on Yeasayer’s label Secretly Canadian, and coincidentally, Gardens & Villa sound a lot like a cross between those two groups. Similarly, Levi Hayden, Shane McKillop, Adam Rasmussen, and Chris Lynch make warm indie pop with airy falsettos and retro synths. It’s a tranquil listen, even when a picnic song like the chillwavey “Orange Blossom,” with its pseudo-sexy hook “Think of me like a swarm of bees/Circling around your knees/To pollinate means ecstasy,” gives way into the chugging acoustics of “Thorn Castles,” a jam that’s brisk enough for a jog on the beach. References to the outdoors are peppered all over the album — from “Black Hills” to “Carrizo Plain”– and this naturalist theme, combined with the digital production, gives the record a nice sense of balance, even if it sometimes lacks originality. ~ Jason Lymangrover, Rovi |

Lost Gardens $5.39 Hidden within the derelict gardens of abandoned Wickersham Priory, a deadly secret is waiting. But when an unsuspecting young Californian named Jamie Gibson finds herself the new owner of the estate, through a surprise bequest from a total stranger—the secret begins to stir. Jamie, fired with enthusiasm to restore the gardens to their 1930s glory, seeks the help of Lawrence Kingston, a retired professor of botany, eccentric bon viveur, and amateur sleuth. Lawrence soon unearths an old chapel, which leads to an ancient Healing Well, which in turn yields a human skeleton. And as the police pursue their inquiries, Kingston begins his own investigation—following a baffling trail of clues that wind down through the centuries, from the battlegrounds of World War II to the depths of the Middle Ages. It is a trail marked by misadventure, revenge, compassion, and murder when finally Kingston unlocks the secret of Wickersham Priory, he and Jamie must confront a reckoning that neither of them could have ever imagined. As with the highly acclaimed The Blue Rose, Eglin brings his botanical and literary skill to this new mystery. |

Grey Gardens $13.58 Directors David Maysles and Albert Maysles’ 1976 film documentary Grey Gardens examined the squalid lives of Edith Bouvier Beale, then in her late seventies, and her daughter, “Little” Edie Beale, then in her mid-fifties, as the two lived together in a decaying mansion on Long Island. The Beales were, respectively, an aunt and first cousin of Jacqueline Kennedy Onassis, and had lived lives of wealth and high society before descending into a reclusive existence. The musical adaptation of Grey Gardens, with a libretto by Doug Wright and songs by composer Scott Frankel and lyricist Michael Korie, spends only its second act in the 1970s, after a first act set in 1941 that compresses the crises of the Beales’ lives (the mother’s breakup with her husband, the daughter’s breakup with her fiancé, Joseph Kennedy, Jr.) into a single afternoon. The use of the two time periods allows Frankel and Korie to write two different styles of songs. In their telling, the mother is a singer planning a concert at her daughter’s engagement party, and so they write a group of pastiche songs that sound like they come from the interwar period, heavily influenced by Irving Berlin and Jerome Kern. Then, when they switch to the 1970s, their songs are imbued with the minor-key melodies and sharp lyrical edges of Stephen Sondheim. Both styles are well executed musically, although Korie might have done more historical research to get the anachronisms out of his words. (One example: in 1941, Edie says to Edith that “Peas in a Pod” is “the very first song you ever taught me,” which should place it back in the 1920s, but the lyrics contain a reference to the cinematic comedy team of Bing Crosby and Bob Hope, which did not come into existence until 1940.) Best of all is the casting of Christine Ebersole, who plays the mother in the first act and the daughter in the second, although the lesser parts played by Mary Louise Wilson (as the mother in the second act) and John McMartin (as Edith’s father and Edie’s grandfather) are also expertly acted. When Grey Gardens opened at the Playwrights Horizons theater company in New York City on March 7, 2006, it was hailed by many as the best off-Broadway musical of the 2005-2006 season, and a transfer to Broadway was arranged for the fall. The cast recording, released during the summer, tended to confirm the judgment of the theater critics, indicating that it would be the show to beat as the best Broadway musical production of the 2006-2007 season. ~ William Ruhlmann, Rovi Performers: Grey Gardens Cast Ensemble – Choir, Chorus; Audrey Twitchell – Vocals; Bob Stillman – Vocals; Christine Ebersole – Vocals; |

Gardens of the Moon $6.19 The Malazan Empire simmers with discontent, bled dry by interminable warfare, bitter infighting and bloody confrontations with the formidable Anomander Rake and his Tiste Andii, ancient and implacable sorcerers. Even the imperial legions, long inured to the bloodshed, yearn for some respite. Yet Empress Laseen’s rule remains absolute, enforced by her dread Claw assassins. For Sergeant Whiskeyjack and his squad of Bridgeburners, and for Tattersail, surviving cadre mage of the Second Legion, the aftermath of the siege of Pale should have been a time to mourn the many dead. But Darujhistan, last of the Free Cities of Genabackis, yet holds out. It is to this ancient citadel that Laseen turns her predatory gaze. However, it would appear that the Empire is not alone in this great game. Sinister, shadowbound forces are gathering as the gods themselves prepare to play their hand… Conceived and written on a panoramic scale, Gardens of the Moon is epic fantasy of the highest order–an enthralling adventure by an outstanding new voice. |

Hanging Gardens $14.38 Hanging Gardens, the Necks’ seventh album, was first released in 1999 on their own label, Fish of Milk, and reissued by ReR Megacorp two years later for the European and American markets. There is a reason why the British avant-rock label chose this particular title: it is a lot more energy-driven. As usual, the CD is comprised of a single hour-long piece performed nonstop. Drummer Tony Buck lays down a fast-paced, highly danceable groove backed by Lloyd Swanton’s insistent acoustic bassline. Both musicians add ornaments to the basic motif, but all in all nothing really changes over the course of 60 minutes. Chris Abrahams follows a 16-bar piano motif, typically simple and augmented by stabs of electric piano (through an echo box) and occasional organ sweeps early in the piece. Unlike Aether or even Piano Bass Drums, Hanging Gardens starts almost abruptly, with every element put into place quickly, reaches its cruising speed after seven minutes, and doesn’t let go until five minutes before the end when things simmer down, leaving only a few notes on the Fender Rhodes. The music is as hypnotic as usual with the Necks, but it takes the form of an acoustic space/trance drive, something like Medeski, Martin & Wood meeting the Ozric Tentacles. It doesn’t have the spellbinding power of Aether, but it makes a better introduction to the band. ~ François Couture, Rovi Performers: Chris Abrahams – Fender Rhodes, Organ (Hammond), Piano, Piano (Electric), Keyboards; Lloyd Swanton – Bass (Acoustic), Bass (Electric); Tony Buck – Sampling, Drums, Percussion |

A century of enlightenment rational utopianism and exploration of new ways of being human has fallen dark. Outers are herded into prison camps and forced to collaborate in the systematic plundering of their great archives of scientific and technical knowledge while Earth’s forces loot their cities settlements and ships and plan a final solution to the ‘Outer problem’. But Earth’s victory is fragile and riven by vicious internal politics. While seeking out and trying to anatomise the strange gardens abandoned in place by Avernus the Outers’ greatest genius the gene wizard Sri Hong-Owen is embroiled in the plots and counterplots of the family that employs her. Mechanical Gardens $12.78 Sounding less like a band working in one particular strain of 21st century psychedelia and more like a mélange of any number of them, from murky lo-fi hooks to shimmering post-shoegaze noise and soft male-female vocal interplay, Altar Eagle finds the duo of Brad and Eden Rose, the masterminds behind the Foxy Digitalis site and associated labels, on a new creative high. On Mechanical Gardens — an album that seems like it should be released on cassette rather than vinyl or digital thanks to all the warm, sonic fuzz at work — the duo happily embraces the possibilities of catchy pop via indirect means, a classic trick, but one which sounds a touch fresher as it’s neither guitar fuzz with hooks or clean synths and beats. Instead, it’s almost as if the minimal wave crew got geekily happy and created an equal but opposite record to the xx’s debut, as the song like “Spy Movie” demonstrates. Opening song “Battlegrounds” sets the general tone while including a great instrumental mid-song break to boot, a simple keyboard melody surrounded by feedback wash. If the duo doesn’t have the rhythmic reach of a similarly inclined act like Panda Bear, hearing the squelching glitch skip and rumble on “Honey” is a treat nonetheless. Meanwhile, the straight-ahead pace of “Monsters” gets swathed in as much extra noise as any random Jesus and Mary Chain track, but by having those elements comprise keyboard textures rather than guitar feedback it all becomes another example of an ’80s movie anthem that’s just a little out of time. Another interesting touch comes courtesy of slightly inverted expectations: the gentle, melodic flow and vocals on “You Lost Your Neon Haze” seem like a song that is almost summed up in two minutes but runs for nearly eight. Further, any album with a track like “Breakdown,” which sounds like a loop of the opening seconds of the full version of the Boo Radleys’ “Lazarus,” has a certain something. ~ Ned Raggett, Rovi |

Cinnamon Gardens $4.79 Selvadurai has captured horrifyingly well the airlessness of a society in which only a few are truly able to breathe and deeply Mary Loudon The Times In Shyam Selvadurais masterful second novel set in repressive and complex 1920s Ceylon the Cinnamon Gardens is a residential enclave of wealthy Ceylonese. Among them is Annalukshmi an independent and high-spirited young teacher intent on thwarting her parents plans to arrange her marriage. In a parallel narrative her uncle Balendran Navaratnam respectably married but secretly homosexual has his life disrupted by the arrival in Ceylon of Richard a lover from long ago. Richly rewarding . . . this is in many ways an old-fashioned novel brimming with old-fashioned virtues. The characters and setting are established in a measured finely judged manner allowing us to feel at home with them. Annalukshmis Jane Austen-ish domestic life — anxious mother bossy aunt catty sisters endless talk of prospective husbands — is brought to life with glancing humour. Not least of the novels virtues is the way he seems to conjure up a whole social panorama. With its vivid evocation of time and place its wise characterisation its involving emotional dramas this is a novel that deserves and will surely gain a wide readership Adam Lively Sunday Times Subtle and deeply humane . . . a fine novel that is both delicately written and very very wise . . . And Grace is driven to prove she has an eye for business when she and her steady companion, Bob Richardson, open the Cottage Tearoom. New friends and neighbors are introduced. Eccentric Lurina Masterson, an eighty-one-year-old bride, brings tears of joy to all when, wearing her childhood dream of white satin, she married “Old Man,” who is ninety-one. And George Maxwell, the ladies’ closest neighbor, provides an inspired solution to preserving Covington’s lush hills and valleys.>” |

Peter Pan In Kensington Gardens $3.29 J M Barrie's most famous character, Peter Pan, originated in a whimsical story from his book The Little White Bird . Peter Pan in Kensington Gardens is a revised version of that same story, and the Peter Pan we meet is a younger, slightly different character to the Peter Pan of Barrie's later, better-known works. Peter is a small boy who is, like all boys, part bird. When he hears his future being discussed he flies out the window and away to Kensington Gardens. There he discovers that he is now more boy than bird, and so he is stranded in the park, unable to fly any longer. |
