An Island Garden $21.28 "Celia Laighton Thaxter (1835-1894) was born in Portsmouth, NH. When she was four, her father became the lighthouse keeper on White Island in the Isles of Shoals. After resigning his post eight years later, he built a resort hotel on Appledore Island in Maine. The first of its kind on the New England coast, the hotel became a gathering place for writers and artists during the latter half of the 19th century. In her last year of life, Celia published this work, in which she lovingly describes her Appledore garden and its flowers. The flowers she grew in her cutting garden filled her own rooms and those of the hotel, and this work became famous for its descriptions of the old-fashioned flowers she grew there. Her island garden, a plot that measured 15 feet square, has been re-created and is open to visitors." |

The Other Garden & Collected Stories $14.45 The stories and classic novel collected here are the work of one of the most subtle and observant writers of our time. Drawing on haunting encounters, solitary lives, hours spent in longing, and the blossoming of unlikely friendships, Wyndham’s writing is full of gestures that celebrate the day-to-day while at the same time reaching out for a more profound engagement, a larger truth. Just over the horizon is the War, its progression touching the lives of women left behind, of young men awaiting call-up, and of those people who have simply been passed by, left to spend their days in their own familiar worlds; all evoked with grace, wit, and luminous elegy. The Other Garden, so swiftly paced, is a gem’ TLS A singular, particular, gentle, biting, vastly entertaining, original writer’ Harper’s Bazaar |

The Modern Japanese Garden Modern Japanese Garden $32.76 Japanese garden design, know to the West primarily in its traditional form, has undergone striking developments over the last decade. The Modern Japanese Garden is the first book to survey these contemporary Japanese gardens, presenting the designs in a way that is relevant to readers and their homes, whether it is in the East or West. Most of the locations have never been seen before in the West. In addition to important public gardens (such as that of the Tokyu Hotel Cerulean Tower, Shibuya) there are examples of some of the best modern domestic gardens. Among the more experimental gardens featured are a water garden with glass rocks; a mountain garden with flashing kinetic rods; a house with a vegetable roof garden; a rock plaza that pumps out mist; and a rock garden built inside a large inclined tube. With chapters exploring such themes as the influence on contemporary design of traditional Japanese cultural ideas, the miniaturization of landscape, sculpture, and texture, and the use by some garden designers of far more planting than was previously found in Japanese garden design, this inspirational book is required reading for all garden enthusiasts, especially those living in urban areas, as well as garden and landscape designers, and architects. |

The Garden Of Allah $1.79 pubOne.info present you this new edition. The fatigue caused by a rough sea journey, and, perhaps, the consciousness that she would have to be dressed before dawn to catch the train for Beni-Mora, prevented Domini Enfilden from sleeping. There was deep silence in the Hotel de la Mer at Robertville. The French officers who took their pension there had long since ascended the hill of Addouna to the barracks. The cafes had closed their doors to the drinkers and domino players. The lounging Arab boys had deserted the sandy Place de la Marine. In their small and dusky bazaars the Israelites had reckoned up the takings of the day, and curled themselves up in gaudy quilts on their low divans to rest. Only two or three gendarmes were still about, and a few French and Spaniards at the Port, where, moored against the wharf, lay the steamer Le General Bertrand, in which Domini had arrived that evening from Marseilles. |

Herman Kenin’s Multnomah Hotel Orchestra & the Garden Dancing Palace Orchestra $11.98 Violinist Howard Kenin led an orchestra in Portland, OR, during the second half of the 1920s and into the early ’30s that sometimes sounded a bit like Jean Goldkette’s Orchestra. The first 17 selections on this CD (dating from 1927-1929) are the most rewarding recordings made by Herman Kenin’s Multinomah Hotel Orchestra. The band (which has ten pieces along with occasional violin solos for the leader) lacks any major soloists and its personnel is completely obscure. However, the vocals by Van Fleming, Gene Dahlgren, Ted O’Hara, and Ken Allen are mostly easy to take; the ensembles are swinging; and the musicianship is pretty good. The arrangements often steal the show. Also on this disc are six selections from the Garden Dancing Palace Orchestra, a group based in Spokane, WA, that was led by violinist Lillian Frederic. Its brand of dance music is complementary with Kenin’s, making this an enjoyable CD full of real obscurities. ~ Scott Yanow, Rovi Performers: Art Kenton – Sax (Alto); Bill Stewart – Trumpet; Ellis Kimball – Trumpet; Glen Johnston – Sax (Alto); Harold Logan – Drums; Herman Kenin – Drums; Jim Taft – Bass (Upright), Bass; Ken Allen – Violin, Vocals; Kennell Allen – Vocals; Vernon Leathers |

The German Hotel; A Comedy, as Performed at the Theatre Royal, Covent Garden. $18.04 The 18th century was a wealth of knowledge, exploration and rapidly growing technology and expanding record-keeping made possible by advances in the printing press. In its determination to preserve the century of revolution, Gale initiated a revolution of its own: digitization of epic proportions to preserve these invaluable works in the largest archive of its kind. Now for the first time these high-quality digital copies of original 18th century manuscripts are available in print, making them highly accessible to libraries, undergraduate students, and independent scholars. The eighteenth-century fascination with Greek and Roman antiquity followed the systematic excavation of the ruins at Pompeii and Herculaneum in southern Italy; and after 1750 a neoclassical style dominated all artistic fields. The titles here trace developments in mostly English-language works on painting, sculpture, architecture, music, theater, and other disciplines. Instructional works on musical instruments, catalogs of art objects, comic operas, and more are also included. ++++The below data was compiled from various identification fields in the bibliographic record of this title. In The Garden $7.79 Life is imperfect. At best, we work hard in life to accomplish things in order to eviscerate these imperfections. But if we are not careful to discover who and whose we are, we will continue in this vicious cycle of accomplishing things instead of relationships. In The Garden is an expressive array of poetry which seeks to inspire people during imperfect times. The exclusivity of this poetry stresses tangible shifting from natural paradigms to natural phenomena. It also draws distinction between paradigms and phenomena in the spiritual realm as well as the natural realm. This is done with the hope of bringing realization to the fact that life (In The Garden) is, and has always been, about relationships among people. |
