In the Garden $11.98 It would probably be an exaggeration to say that Yusef Lateef is underrated; the veteran saxophonist has long commanded a loyal, enthusiastic following. But it might be safe to say that some historians in the jazz world don’t adequately explain just how much of an innovator he is. Lateef was one of the very first people to play modal post-bop — he certainly deserves as much credit as Miles Davis and John Coltrane in that area — and his world music-influenced experiments of the late ’50s were quite advanced for their time. Long after the ’50s, world music continued to fascinate Lateef — and it’s certainly a big part of what he does on In the Garden. Recorded live at the Electric Lodge in Venice, CA (a Los Angeles suburb) on March 1-2, 2003, In the Garden finds an 82-year-old Lateef leading a large ensemble that is mindful of African, Middle Eastern, and Asian music. Lateef not only plays the tenor sax on these performances — he’s also heard on a variety of flutes — and his sidemen play everything from flutes and clarinets to traditional string and percussion instruments from Africa and Asia. Those who are seriously into world music might recognize the sound of the Indian bansuri flute, or African udu drums, but even if you can’t pick out all the instruments, it is obvious that Lateef and his colleagues are thinking globally throughout this rewarding two-CD set. These performances tend to be abstract, sometimes drawing on free jazz. But those who are adventurous enough to go along for the ride will find a lot to enjoy about In the Garden. ~ Alex Henderson, Rovi Performers: Miles Shrewsbery – Frame Drum, Shaker, Tabla, Udu; Paul Sherman – Baroque Oboe, Horn (English), Oboe; Ralph Jones – Hichiriki, Bamboo Trumpet, Ney, Flute (Alto), Flute; Ralph Jones Band – Bamboo Trumpet, Hichiriki, Ney, Flute (Alto), Flute; Adam Rudolph – Overtone Flute, Cajon, Djembe, Balafon, Talking Drum, Hand Drums, Conga, Vocals; Andres Renteria – Bowls, Cajon, Bata, Shaker; Bennie Maupin – Bugle, Shakuhachi, Rainstick, Bamboo Flute, Flute (Alto), Clarinet ( |

My World Garden provides a thematic introduction to history and geography via the long interactions between man and plants around the world. The plants tell their story and find a place in ‘My World Garden’ via the packets of seeds of the four basic cereals of four great civilizations: wheat (Europe), maize (America), rice (Asia) and sorghum (Africa); and a board game where each player searches for plants all over the world and discovers the world’s major climate zones. This box contains: A 100-page booklet recounting the adventures of humans and plants around the world, including the birth of the various vegetable kingdoms, major discoveries and the secret journeys of plants; A 36-page activity booklet ‘Let’s Create the World Garden’ presenting 16 gardens from around the world to imitate at home; 4 packets of seeds of the four main cereal crops: wheat, maize, rice and sorghum; a board game where each player searches for plants all over the world, and a cotton bag containing real seeds, which serve as counters for the game. Into the Garden $7.99 THEY BEGAN AS STRANGERS — FOUR TEENAGE GIRLS WITH NOTHING IN COMMON BUT THEIR MISERABLE CHILDHOODS. SOON, THEY WOULD REALIZE THAT THEIR SECRET PASTS HAD BOUND THEM TOGETHER FOREVER…. Misty, Star, Jade, and Cat first came together in Dr. Marlowe’s group therapy sessions. They trusted no one but each other — and even that bond was fragile at best. One by one, each of the Wildflowers told her own story and bravely unveiled the inner wounds inflicted by years of lies, deceit, and untold family secrets; each revealed the shocking tales of how their parents hurt them, used them, or simply abandoned them. And as they shared their darkest feelings, they no longer felt like lost souls with nowhere to turn. Finally, years of loneliness and pain gave way to the realization that someone else in this world understood them. But then the sessions ended, and the girls didn’t know if they would ever see each other again. Now they are coming together one more time. Jade has sent out invitations to her parents’ mansion — the sprawling, opulent home that served as a battleground for much of her young life. There, the four will rekindle their bonds of friendship and trust. But this time, away from Dr. Marlowe’s watchful eye, it will be different. Today, in the mansion’s attic, Star, Jade, Cat, and Misty will take each other’s hands and swear to tell the real truth — the shattering secrets that lie deep within them like smoldering coals. And once the darkest secret of all is spoken aloud, there will be no turning back. For there may be some things the Wildflowers should leave buried forever…. |

Garden In The Sky $19.18 Mayumi is a classically trained pianist and composer with an extensive background as a performer both in her native Japan and in the United States, where she currently resides. Her debut album Garden in the Sky is a collection of heartfelt original compositions, reflecting a strong influence from the Romantic and Impressionist eras. Most of the pieces feature delicate interactions between piano and synthesizer, with much use of water imagery and angelic voices. Mayumi’s love of nature is apparent both in the peacefulness of much of the music and in the song titles (“My Sky,” “Sea Breeze,” “Tahoe”), along with a sense of quiet yearning for a purer world (“Elysian Fields,” “Garden in the Sky,” “To Heaven”). There are some dramatic moments amidst the general tranquil feeling of the music, such as the electronic slap percussion of “Dancing Doll,” the grand crescendo at the end of “Butterfly,” and the crashing cymbals and tympani in “To Heaven.” But for the most part Garden in the Sky is a gentle meditation on the beauty of the natural world, tinged with a desire for transcendence. ~ Backroads Music/Heartbeats, Rovi |

Robinson’s Garden $25.46 A subtle metaphor for the increasing depersonalization of Japanese society caused by the country’s unending obsession with money making, avant-garde filmmaker Masashi Yamamoto’s Robinson’s Garden offers a powerful commentary on the relative insignificance of Humanity upon the much older, more enduring world. The story (told not as a straightforward narrative, but rather as a series of exquisitely photographed poetic images) centers on a young woman who, though she earns a middle-class income, augments her salary by dealing drugs. One day, while she is drunk and wandering the streets, she runs across an empty factory. Beside it lies a verdant, beautiful garden. Captivated, the woman moves into the factory, making it a beautiful place filled with gay colors and flashing lights, and she begins tending the garden, making it lovely but keeping it apart from her living space. One day, a tough little street girl shows up and enjoys the garden with the woman. Life in the fantasy world soon consumes the woman and as time passes she becomes increasingly withdrawn from her life in the real world. Eventually she becomes very sick. Too weak to keep the jungle plants of the garden from overtaking her home, delirium forces her to flee the garden and reenter the surrounding city. Unfortunately she finds only visions of her late grandfather. Frightened and without solace, she makes her way back to the haven to meet her fate. ~ Sandra Brennan, Rovi |

The Savage Garden $5.99 In 1958, Adam Strickland, a Cambridge student, travels to Villa Docci in Tuscany to study a sixteenth-century garden. Designed and laid out by a grieving husband to the memory of his dead wife, it is a mysterious world of statues, grottoes, meandering rills and classical inscriptions. Adam is fascinated by the Doccis and increasingly aware that there are dangerous secrets hidden within the family domain. The garden itself starts to exercise a powerful influence over his imagination, its iconography seeming to point to some darker truth than was first apparent. And what really lay behind a tragic killing at the villa towards the end of the war? Past and present, love and intrigue, intertwine in an evocative mystery which vividly captures the experience of an innocent abroad in the uncertain world of post-war Italy. |

Garden of the Gods $12.71 The shining red rocks on the outskirts of Colorado Springs are a most striking spectacle within the Garden Of The Gods. The huge red sandstone rock formations rise to a height of up to a hundred and fifty metres. These natural monuments are a reminder of the geological past of this extraordinary region situated at the foot of the Rocky Mountains.Protected by the rocky terrain the Ute Indians found this to be an ideal place in which to spend the winter months. The tribes’ winter camps existed there up until the late nineteenth century. A combination of three ecological systems, indigenous wildlife and vegetation provided a good source of nourishment for the Indians. The Ute not only used the Garden Of The Gods as a winter camp but also as a starting point for their journeys through the Ute Pass.Rain, wind, ice and melting snow have gradually created the elevated layers of rock in the Garden Of The Gods and have given it its unique appearance. The surrounding landscape enchants due to its spectacular beauty and small forests and meadows are in stark contract to this world of natural stone. The rocks in the Garden Of The Gods are silent witnesses of a unique geological development and a true wonder of nature! Source: Travel Video Store |

The Red Garden $11.99 The Red Garden introduces us to the luminous and haunting world of Blackwell, Massachusetts, capturing the unexpected turns in its history and in our own lives.      In exquisite prose, Hoffman offers a transforming glimpse of small-town America, presenting us with some three hundred years of passion, dark secrets, loyalty, and redemption in a web of tales where characters’ lives are intertwined by fate and by their own actions.      From the town’s founder, a brave young woman from England who has no fear of blizzards or bears, to the young man who runs away to New York City with only his dog for company, the characters in The Red Garden are extraordinary and vivid: a young wounded Civil War soldier who is saved by a passionate neighbor, a woman who meets a fiercely human historical character, a poet who falls in love with a blind man, a mysterious traveler who comes to town in the year when summer never arrives.      At the center of everyone’s life is a mysterious garden where only red plants can grow, and where the truth can be found by those who dare to look.      Beautifully crafted, shimmering with magic, The Red Garden is as unforgettable as it is moving. |

The Artful Garden $21.99 “I want to put the mystery back into the heart of garden design, where it needs to be. It’s what lures you in through the gate, keeps you moving through the landscape, and fills you with excitement along the way. The sense of mystery is what turns a mere display of plants, paths, and ornaments into an adventure.”                           —James van Sweden   Guided by world-renowned landscape architect James van Sweden and horticulture expert Tom Christopher, any gardener can learn the secrets of the gardener’s art and absorb the essence of inspired garden design. In their gifted hands, creating your own perfect garden, with its own alluring mysteries, turns out to be not only easy but a delight. Whether it’s a ten-foot-square city terrace or a ten-acre expanse, the same principles apply: the intelligent use of positive and negative space, of form and scale, of light and shadow, of rough and smooth textures. Do you want a garden you can immerse yourself in? A garden you can smell and listen to as well as observe? An exuberant garden or a contemplative garden? In this elegantly written and visually stunning book, van Sweden reveals the secrets of famous gardens around the world and encourages you to find inspiration in the arts—in painting (from America’s classic regional artists to the abstract expressionists), music (from classical to jazz), sculpture, even dance. He introduces you to famous artists who share how their art has influenced the design of their own gardens, and teaches you to think not in terms of borders and beds or even paths and meadows but of a tapestry woven from sky, trees, rocks, vines, flowers, grasses, and space. Richly illustrated throughout with magnificent photographs, The Artful Garden both tells and shows, sharing with beginning and experienced gardeners a wealth of inspiration and practical help. “What’s my message?” van Sweden asks in conclusion. The wise answer: “Don’t squander the potential for surprise and wonder.” This beautiful book guarantees everyone who reads it a priceless store of gardening wisdom. From the Hardcover edition. |

Garden State $8.47 The soundtrack to Zach Braff’s Garden State is nearly as much of a piece with the film as the similarly sweet, quirky combinations of sound and vision in Wes Anderson’s films and soundtracks. Garden State, however, is more modern in its outlook and more emotionally direct, with a mixtape earnestness belied by using not one but two songs from the Shins’ Oh, Inverted World. “New Slang” is an obvious choice, as the song just seems to grow in stature as time passes, but “Caring Is Creepy,” Oh, Inverted World’s vulnerable, ever-so-slightly unhinged opening track, is not, and adds to the personal, diary-like feel of the album. The bright poignancy of the Shins’ tracks stands out even more among the low-key melancholy of songs like Coldplay’s “Don’t Panic,” Remy Zero’s “Fair,” and Colin Hay’s “I Just Don’t Think I’ll Ever Get Over You.” The inclusion of Hay’s track, Bonnie Somerville’s “Winding Road,” and the Cary Brothers’ “Blue Eyes” shows that Garden State doesn’t go for the hipster, too-cool-for-school poses that one might expect from the soundtrack of a hot indie movie, even with the inclusion of Iron & Wine’s cover of the Postal Service’s “Such Great Heights.” Still, there’s something of a collegiate feel to the soundtrack, especially with the re-rediscovery of Nick Drake (“One of These Things First”) and Simon & Garfunkel (“The Only Living Boy in New York”) as well as the tentative forays into electronica and trip-hop like Zero 7′s “In the Waiting Line,” Frou Frou’s “Let Go,” and Thievery Corporation’s “Lebanese Blonde.” Perhaps this collegiate feel comes from the fact that those years are often the time when many people are the most ready and willing to explore music that is new to them (but not necessarily new), but, as the success of Garden State’s soundtrack shows, any time can be the right time. ~ Heather Phares, Rovi |

Prometheus’ Garden $21.21 A frequent collaborator, clay animation artist Bruce Bickford ostensibly made only one short film which represents unmitigated Bickford: PROMETHEUS’ GARDEN. Based on Greek mythology and made entirely under his sole control, the film unfolds in a surreal stream-of-consciousness and features some of the most bizarre, beautiful, and jarring images imaginable. control.Inspired by the Greek myth of Prometheus, a Titan who created the first mortals from clay and stole fire from the gods, Prometheus’ Garden immerses viewers in a cinematic universe unlike any other. The dark and magical images of this haunting film unfold in a dreamlike stream of consciousness revealing an unlikely cast of clay characters engaged in a violent struggle for survival. Like all Bickford films, Prometheus’ Garden defies description and simply must be experienced. In Clay Animation, film scholar Michael Frierson writes: Bickford offers us a visionary landscape, a hallucinogenic retreat into magical settings where figure and ground may transform into the other at any moment, enchanted settings in which modern technocrats are easy villains and nature is under siege. Bickford is an underground artist who has mystified animation critics and inspired generations of animators, while somehow eluding fame. He has been described as the world’s only outsider artist working in the medium of animation. He has been recognized as a genius by Frank Zappa and countless other iconoclasts. One thing is certain: Bickford is a true original. In his collaborations with Frank Zappa in the 1970s, Bickford relinquished creative control of his work (which was edited and scored by Zappa). Consequently, Prometheus’ Garden is Bickford’s most comprehensive and least compromised vision.Source: Microcinema |

Utopia’s Garden $30 The royal Parisian botanical garden, the Jardin du Roi, was a jewel in the crown of the French Old Regime, praised by both rulers and scientific practitioners. Yet unlike many such institutions, the Jardin not only survived the French Revolution but by 1800 had become the world’s leading public establishment of natural history: the Muséum d’Histoire Naturelle. E. C. Spary traces the scientific, administrative, and political strategies that enabled the foundation of the Muséum, arguing that agriculture and animal breeding rank alongside classification and collections in explaining why natural history was important for French rulers. But the Muséum’s success was also a consequence of its employees’ Revolutionary rhetoric: by displaying the natural order, they suggested, the institution could assist in fashioning a self-educating, self-policing Republican people. Natural history was presented as an indispensable source of national prosperity and individual virtue. Spary’s fascinating account opens a new chapter in the history of France, science, and the Enlightenment. |

City Garden $11.18 Some artists show tremendous promise in the beginning but run out of creative steam a few albums down the line; they create high expectations and don’t live up to them. Others, however, show a fair amount of promise on their early studio recordings and live performances — imperfections and all — and grow and develop as they go along. Jess Klein’s potential as a singer/songwriter was evident when she recorded Wishes Well Disguised back in 1998, but she has really fine-tuned her skills since then — and her growth as an artist is impossible to miss on 2006′s City Garden. Klein has been quoted as saying that she listened to a lot of blues when she was recording City Garden, which is something that Marc Copely (who produced this album as well as 2005′s Strawberry Lover) encouraged. Copely, according to Klein, encouraged her to seriously listen to blues masters like Howlin’ Wolf, Junior Wells, and Buddy Guy — and Klein evidently connected with the raw emotion in their work because there is plenty of blues feeling on rootsy offerings such as “World Could End” and “Holy Land.” That is not to say that Klein did not express blues feeling on previous albums or that City Garden is full of Willie Dixon favorites; Klein wrote all of the songs herself, and none of them are blues in the strict sense. She still has a folk-rock/adult alternative focus, but the point is that all that exposure to the blues really helped her dig deep emotionally — and certainly, things that have been inspiring her for a long time (folk, roots rock, soul) are still inspiring her on this 46-minute disc. City Garden is not a change of direction for Klein — not at all — but rather is a rewarding example of someone who has done a lot of artistic growing along the way and has a wealth of fine songs to show for it. ~ Alex Henderson, Rovi Performers: Jess Klein – Vocal Harmony, National Steel Guitar, Vocals (Background), Harmony Vocals, Vocals, Guitar (Acoustic); John Clancy – Percussion, Drums; Marc Copely – Vocal Harmony, Bass (Electric), Vocals (Background), Slide Guitar, Harmony Vocals, Tambourine, Bass, Guitar (Acoustic), Guitar (Electric); Winston Roye – Bass (Electric), Bass |

The Garden of Truth $10.99 The headlines are filled with the politics of Islam, but there is another side to the world’s fastest-growing religion. Sufism is the poetry and mysticism of Islam. This mystical movement from the early ninth century rejects worship motivated by the desire for heavenly reward or the fear of punishment, insisting rather on the love of God as the only valid form of adoration. Sufism has made significant contributions to Islamic civilization in music and philosophy, dance and literature. The Sufi poet Rumi is the bestselling poet in America. But in recent centuries Sufism has been a target for some extremist Islamic movements as well as many modernists. The Garden of Truth presents the beliefs and vision of the mystical heart of Islam, along with a history of Sufi saints and schools of thought. In a world threatened by religious wars, depleting natural resources, a crumbling ecosystem, and alienation and isolation, what has happened to our humanity? Who are we and what are we doing here? Garden Ruin $12.78 When a band starts out with an aesthetic as specific as Calexico’s, sometimes expanding that sound means incorporating more pop elements into it. And, after years of being known — accurately or not — as the indie-mariachi band, Calexico may have felt boxed in by their very distinctiveness. Like Feast of Wire, Garden Ruin finds them moving further into more song-based, immediately accessible territory (their collaborations and performances with bands like Wilco and Iron & Wine may have also inspired them to tone down their theatricality). With no instrumentals — a first on a Calexico album — and less emphasis on elaborate arrangements, Garden Ruin presents an almost mainstream version of Calexico, with mixed results. At times, as on “Yours and Mine,” the band strays toward typical alt-country and ends up sounding overly restrained and mature. However, the beautiful melodies on “Panic Open String” and “Bisbee Blue” (a warm little love song to Bisbee, AZ, where the album was recorded) and the ’70s singer/songwriterisms of “Lucky Dime” prove that the band can bend pop to Calexico’s sound instead of vice versa. Though Joey Burns’ whispery vocals help make Garden Ruin feel initially more hushed than it actually is, it becomes clear as the album unfolds that Calexico haven’t completely abandoned their flair for striking arrangements and drama. They’ve just channeled it in different directions. “Cruel” — whose lyrics deal with environmental corruption — nods to the classic Calexico sound with its swooning pedal steel, brass, and strings, while “Roka” is a haunted yet sexy-sounding duet that echoes the band’s most stunning moments. “Letter to Bowie Knife” (which sounds like a kissing cousin to their fantastic cover of Love’s “Alone Again Or?”) marries lyrics like “This world’s an ungodly place” to a buoyant melody, one of Calexico’s time-tested tricks. Likewise, the gentlest, most intimate ballad is called “Smash” — but even this relatively quiet song has thunderous timpani rolling in the distance. The band also rocks more than it has in the past, earnestly on “Deep Down” and with real anguish on Garden Ruin’s striking final track, “All Systems Red.” Ultimately, this album ends up being a more naturalistic take on Calexico’s sound; just because it’s less stylized doesn’t mean it’s less interesting — it just takes a little more time for Garden Ruin’s power to reveal itself. ~ Heather Phares, Rovi Performers: Joey Burns – Accordion, Vocals, Guitar (Acoustic); Martin Wenk – Banjo; Volker Zander – Bass (Electric); John Convertino – Drums; Paul Niehaus – Guit |

In the Devil’s Garden $11.99 Deliciously organized by the Seven Deadly Sins, here is a scintillating history of forbidden foods through the ages—and how these mouth-watering taboos have defined cultures around the world. From the lusciously tempting fruit in the Garden of Eden to the divine foie gras , Stewart Lee Allen engagingly illustrates that when a pleasure as primal as eating is criminalized, there is often an astonishing tale to tell. Among the foods thought to encourage Lust, the love apple (now known as the tomato) was thought to possess demonic spirits until the nineteenth century. The Gluttony “course” invites the reader to an ancient Roman dinner party where nearly every dish served—from poppy-crusted rodents to “Trojan Pork”—was considered a crime against the state. While the vice known as Sloth introduces the sad story of “The Lazy Root” (the potato), whose popularity in Ireland led British moralists to claim that the Great Famine was God’s way of punishing the Irish for eating a food that bred degeneracy and idleness. Filled with incredible food history and the author’s travels to many of these exotic locales, In the Devil’s Garden also features recipes like the matzo-ball stews outlawed by the Spanish Inquisition and the forbidden “chocolate champagnes” of the Aztecs. This is truly a delectable book that will be consumed by food lovers, culinary historians, amateur anthropologists, and armchair travelers alike. Bon appétit! From the Trade Paperback edition. |

The Butterfly Garden $9.29 One of America’s Most Fascinating True Crime Cases Fear rocked Chip St. Clair’s world. As a boy, he never knew what would set his father off–maybe the ice cubes had melted in his glass of Tab, maybe dinner was overcooked or undercooked or the gravy was too runny. Regardless, the beatings always came. As did the twisted games of cat and mouse–being thrown from a rowboat into frigid Lake Michigan, the middle-of-the-night moves to different states, or being left to dangle over a ten-story balcony while his father watched from inside. But one fateful night when the police answered the call, the truth came to light from the shadows, sparking national headlines: Chip St. Clair’s entire life–his name, even his date of birth–had been a lie, and the man he called ‘Dad’ was an impostor, an escaped child killer who had been on the run for over two decades. The stunning revelation would send one of America’s Most Wanted to justice and another on a quest for his true identity. With chilling detail and a riveting, lyrical narrative, The Butterfly Garden reveals St. Clair’s struggle to piece together his haunted past before it consumes him and shares his inspiring metamorphosis from victim to victim’s advocate. The Butterfly Garden is a timeless triumph, a reminder that hope can be the most powerful of all emotions, freeing us to soar despite the past and the odds against us. |

The Gospel in the Garden $14.99 “What should a loving husband do? His precious wife was masterfully manipulated into believing a lie. She has been deceived and has sealed her fate: she is going to die. Should he just stand aside and let her die, or will one self-sacrificing action on his part actually set in motion her salvation? He is, after all, created in God’s own image. The question is: What would Jesus do, faced with this dilemma? This book reveals that the Garden of Eden held good news for mankind. Adam did not disappoint God with his choice. The Bible declares that God had a plan for salvation from before the foundation of the world. Salvation through a Roman cross and an empty tomb was never God’s “Plan B” for mankind. The gospel of redemption has been God’s only plan since the beginning of time. In our current day, this truth about redemption has been blurred. This book restores the clarity of God’s plan for making salvation available for all mankind. One plan, one purpose, from beginning to end.” |

In Doctor No’s Garden $4.58 With this assured and powerful first collection, Henry Shukman springs fully-formed into the poetry world, having already won a raft of prizes for individual poems. His sensibility is unique, engaging and immediate; we are drawn into the worlds of these poems by his accurate eye, his sensual line and the warmth of his communion with the scene he describes. Ranging across the globe, from Mexico to Japan, from the States to Southern England, these poems can be lyrical and deeply affecting, wryly funny or wildly imaginative. From a lonely mother attempting to learn the piano to a ski-jump that never ends, from a redemptive encounter with horses on a cold day to a miraculous bowl of chicken soup, these poems display a vibrancy and variety rarely seen in contemporary poetry. But Shukman’s great strength is in the domestic: the complexities of love, and the rites of passage of childhood and parenthood, are re-entered with candour, grace and originality. In Doctor No’s Garden is an affectionate, refreshing debut, striking in its imagery and insight, remarkable for its lightness of touch and emotional weight. |

In the Garden of Beasts $12.99 “Larson is a marvelous writer…superb at creating characters with a few short strokes.”— New York Times Book Review    Erik Larson has been widely acclaimed as a master of narrative non-fiction, and in his new book, the bestselling author of Devil in the White City turns his hand to a remarkable story set during Hitler’s rise to power.   The time is 1933, the place, Berlin, when William E. Dodd becomes America’s first ambassador to Hitler’s Germany in a year that proved to be a turning point in history.   A mild-mannered professor from Chicago, Dodd brings along his wife, son, and flamboyant daughter, Martha. At first Martha is entranced by the parties and pomp, and the handsome young men of the Third Reich with their infectious enthusiasm for restoring Germany to a position of world prominence. Enamored of the “New Germany,” she has one affair after another, including with the suprisingly honorable first chief of the Gestapo, Rudolf Diels. But as evidence of Jewish persecution mounts, confirmed by chilling first-person testimony, her father telegraphs his concerns to a largely indifferent State Department back home. Dodd watches with alarm as Jews are attacked, the press is censored, and drafts of frightening new laws begin to circulate. As that first year unfolds and the shadows deepen, the Dodds experience days full of excitement, intrigue, romance—and ultimately, horror, when a climactic spasm of violence and murder reveals Hitler’s true character and ruthless ambition.   Suffused with the tense atmosphere of the period, and with unforgettable portraits of the bizarre Göring and the expectedly charming–yet wholly sinister–Goebbels, In the Garden of Beasts lends a stunning, eyewitness perspective on events as they unfold in real time, revealing an era of surprising nuance and complexity. The result is a dazzling, addictively readable work that speaks volumes about why the world did not recognize the grave threat posed by Hitler until Berlin, and Europe, were awash in blood and terror. Dream Garden $12.78 Adam Rudolph is percussion master, composer, arranger, and producer. His Moving Pictures group has been one of his three mainstays (along with HU Vibrational and Go: Organic Orchestra) since he founded the group in 1992 (despite having literally dozens of other projects including the Mandingo Griot Society and collaborating with Dr. Yusef Lateef on some 20 albums in as many years). Its members have shifted continuously, but jazz drummer Hamid Drake has been a member almost since the beginning; Ned Rothenberg has also been a contributing member in the past. On Dream Garden, however, his debut for Justin Time Records, Rudolph moves his group into an entirely new sphere, one in which the culminations of his hundreds of collaborations and his multi-disciplinary approach to composition and improvisation all come to bear on a single recording. That doesn’t mean hodgepodge, either. This version of Moving Pictures contains perhaps its most talented lineup yet. Rothenberg is here on everything from shakuhachi, C-and bass flutes, to bass clarinet and alto saxophone; Drake, with his drum kit, gourds, and frame drums, is present. Trumpeter Graham Haynes has put his experimental electronic and club explorations on hold for the time being to bring his trumpet and flugelhorn to this mix, while Shanir Blumenkranz is here on bass and the three-stringed sintir (a bass-like lute). As if this weren’t an already impressive ensemble, guitarist Kenny Wessel and multi-instrumentalist Brahim Fribgane (who plays not only his trademark oud, but also cajon, bendir, and tarija) are here as well. Finally, rounding all of this out is the great bansuri flutist Steve Gorn, who also plays a Pakistani oboe, clarinet, and various Indian penny whistles. What’s it sound like? It sounds like the center of a universe where the cyclical rhythmic pulses are those of the world’s various traditions — many of which Rudolph himself is has studied as both musician, and ethno-musicologist — and he plays seven instruments including thumb pianos, naqqara, tarija, caxcixi, gourds, hand drum sets (djembes, tablas, congas, timbales, and talking drums), with a boatload of other percussion items; all of which meet in the great vanguard tradition of spiritual jazz structured elements of world folks and classical musics. While it would be simple to call this “world fusion,” it would be inaccurate. The aesthetics that create Dream Garden are quite specific and disciplined. Rudolph’s hand drums open the album for “Oshogbo.” Drake fills the backdrop almost immediately and then Haynes comes in on trumpet with flutes, saxophone, and whistles entering with a stretched, loping, unhurried melody that is underscored and colored by electric guitar chords and the exploration of intervallic mediums. The bassline rambles and rumbles not as a pulse but as an accent; it moves between the percussionists on a steady, ever intensifying drive. Haynes takes his solo and is answered by the chorus of instruments as he spl |

Back to the Garden $14.38 Back to the Garden reflects a yearning for — and/or a return to — simpler times. Dean Evenson and Tom Barabas have created a set of psychoactive compositions that tunes to the simplicity of the new age — spiritually and holistically. Evenson and Barabas embrace all the qualities of the holistic new age with no hesitation and no shame. This disc’s only drawbacks — if, indeed, they are drawbacks — are its steadfast dedication to its purpose and its sincerity. Both of these artists have true desires for their music to reach and, ideally, to heal the world. So, if every listener allows it to heal his or her corner of the world and shares it with one other person, it is achievable, albeit exponentially mind-boggling. This special disc will appeal to fans of Lisa Lynne, Susan Craig Winsberg, Riley Lee, and Stan Richardson. ~ Jim Brenholts, Rovi Performers: Dudley Evenson – Harp; Dean Evanson – Flute; Dean Evenson – Flute; Joseph Danza – Percussion; Richard Hardy – Penny Whistle, Flute (Alto), Clarinet, Sax (Tenor), Sax (Alto); Tom Barabas – Keyboards, Piano |

The Night Garden $3.99 DescriptionIn her first novel since the acclaimed memoir The Toaster Broke, So We’re Getting Married, Pamela Holm brings us a poignant, funny story about monogamy, motherhood, and the wonders of gardening. Dawn, an exterminator by day and an artist by night, and her charmingly morbid nine-year-old daughter, Jewel, find themselves with a room to rent out when they move out of Dawn’s boyfriend’s house and into a new home. They soon hear from Harlan, a frustrated documentary filmmaker whose world is quietly crashing down on him too. Over the course of a year, Dawn, Jewel, and Harlan’s worlds become intertwined as they transform their lives and bring the neglected garden of their new home back to life. About the AuthorPamela Holm is a freelance artist living in San Francisco. She has written a myriad of essays that have been published in a variety of newspapers and magazines including Image Magazine, SOMA, San Francisco Magazine, the San Francisco Chronicle, and the Denver Post. The Toaster Broke, So We’re Getting Married, is her first memoir helping her to discover that laughter is the best therapy and writing continues to be her passion. From the AuthorAs Denzil and I made plans for our future, I couldn’t help but see everything through a filter of the past. I had spent the past several years of my life as a single mother struggling to make ends meet while working as a freelance artist. After dodging calls from collection agencies, contemplating buying a $5,000 wedding gown seemed surreal, and after my pantheon of bad boyfriends, the fact that I actually wanted to get married still amazed me.Partly in an effort to deal with these confusing emotions and partly because I was so amused by my own strange behavior, I began to write about getting married. For six months I wrote about everything I thought and did. I wrote pages and pages, I filled notebooks, I scribbled on the backs of ATM receipts and napkins, anything I could get my hands on. Post-it notes with cryptic messages like “burn CD for dinner,” and “a veil that made me look like a beekeeper” were stuck to the walls around my desk.Writing a memoir was never my intent, but I was happily surprised when these notes decided to turn themselves into a book. |

Victory Garden $12.78 Canadian singer/songwriter Laura Barrett’s first full-length recording mines the same delicate, impossibly playful alternative folk milieu as her 2006 debut EP, Earth Sciences. Often compared to pixie harpist Joanna Newsom, Barrett’s weapon of choice is the African thumb piano, a handheld cousin of the larger mbira made famous by South African artist Stella Chiweshe. Like Newsom, the intricate fingerpicking that her instrument requires yields a lush web of sound in which to lay her offbeat lyrics and sinewy melodies. Unlike Newsom, Barrett possesses a non-divisive set of pipes that are both pleasant and plain, recalling a young Shirley Collins, and the 12 disparate songs that make up Victory Garden benefit from her evenhanded delivery. Clearly versed in the scholarly side of the music world, Barrett’s melodies are both familiar and otherworldly, twisting and turning like mid-’70s Joni Mitchell with a 21st century “freak folk” sheen, and it’s a testament to her labyrinthine composition skills that the results are almost never cloying. Genres yield no property lines for Barrett, as she gleefully skips from folk (“Wood Between Worlds”) to classical pop (“Escape to the Sun Dome”) to torch song (“To the Stars”) without ever breaking a sweat. Even when she misses the mark, like on the warbled, off-key French experimental indie pop number “Rien à Déclarer,” it’s hard not to root for her. ~ James Christopher Monger, Rovi Performers: Basia Bulat – Autoharp, Voices; Alex McMaster – Cello; Jeremy Strachan – Clarinet (Bass), Flute; Nick Storring – Cello; Paul Aucoin – Xylophone, Vibraphone, Percussion; Tyler Greenleaf – Trumpet, Trombone |

Garden of the Finzi-Continis, The $25.46 Master storyteller Vittorio de Sica sets his last great film, THE GARDEN OF THE FINZI-CONTINIS in the small Italian town of Ferrara during World War II. The Finzi-Continis, a wealthy Jewish family, live in a castle surrounded by a beautiful garden. While the garden creates the family’s physical barrier to the outside world, an elaborate series of psychological barriers allow the family to avoid thinking about the fascists who rule the country beyond their gates. But like all Italian Jews, the Finzi-Continis cannot escape the effects of the war raging around them, and the times eventually catch up to them. A work of fine detail and striking beauty, de Sica’s film is inarguably one of the masterpieces of world cinema. |
