Urban Garden Design UK – What’s working in the UK?

Gardens in London are increasingly extensions of the living space outdoors. D.I.Y. Decks And Patios are now commonplace in suburban gardens together with the ubiquitous barbecue. Few of these gardens, however, are the restful oases of calm that they should be. The move to a more outdoors style of living and dining has not been universally accompanied by a sense of style. In some circles, however, there is a growing awareness that it is not enough to extend the house with a hardwood deck. It also needs Landscaping.

There is a reaction among busy city workers against the high maintenance garden, with grass-mowing every Sunday, weeding and flower bed digging. Londoners are going for low maintenance outdoor spaces, designed primarily for entertaining in. At the same time it is recognised that to live and entertain out of doors, the surroundings need to be something more than an empty space and a view of the neighbours’ washing. This is increasingly leading, amongst those in the know, to a courtyard garden style.

Designers are using stone slabs, concrete paving or hardwood decks to give a maintenance free surface. A combination of wood and stone or slate can increase the feeling of space. Lush planting round the edges with tall bamboos, palms and grasses is quite possible in the London climate and not only helps to enclose the garden but lends an exotic atmosphere. The planting is minimal, but the plants themselves are generous in their proportions.

The use of a water pump to create a splashing fountain or rill adds to the feeling of remoteness from the city. Smooth pebbles with water flowing over them in a raised channel or around a fountain add to the relaxing and calming effect.

Contemporary Outdoor Furniture, in modern steel, glass, or hardwood, is chic and stylish as well as practical. Discreet lighting is now a normal part of the garden design. The bamboos and palms or other surrounding greenery are lit from below. Light plays on the water, often also with lighting from below through glass blocks.

These London gardens are a far cry from the high maintenance cottage garden style so beloved of English Gardeners. These are gardens in which all the work is in the initial landscaping. Once done, there is a minimum of effort and a maximum reward.

Outdoors: The Garden Design Book for the Twenty-First Century

Outdoors: The Garden Design Book for the Twenty-First Century

$43.98

The ultimate garden design book: a visual delight covering all aspects of working and living in your garden with stunning photographs of gardens from around the world. The contemporary garden carries a profound connection both to the environment and to the range of activities–relaxing, entertaining, working–that characterize today’s lifestyle. A collaboration between a distinguished style setter and a noted garden designer, "Outdoors" presents the principles of imaginative and innovative landscape design, providing readers with useful knowledge and also with inspiration from diverse sources: history, media, fashion, architecture. Thematic chapters present a wide variety of successful gardens developed for specific purposes. Formal urban gardens on rooftops are explored, as are free-form rural landscapes, backyards devised to encourage children’s imaginations, and spaces planned primarily for al fresco entertaining. Extensively illustrated case studies demonstrate inventive design on a grand scale as well as the creative detailing that sets one garden apart from another. In these sections, professionally designed gardens are explored methodically to reveal techniques behind planning and layout, planting choices, intended uses, and relation to the larger landscape. A special focus on conservation philosophies addresses wildlife, recycling, and water-wise gardening. Also included are a step-by-step guide to planning a garden, advice on selecting and working with a garden designer, and an extensive catalog of plants, with scientific names, foliage and bloom descriptions, and planting suggestions. The authors engage in a lively dialogue, discussing their personal insight into the early and main influences on their work, how garden design has evolved, its current place in design as a whole, and the journey that it will take throughout the century. Their very different styles provide readers with both practical knowledge and confidence to seek inspiration for their gardens.

It would probably be an exaggeration to say that Yusef Lateef is underrated; the veteran saxophonist has long commanded a loyal, enthusiastic following. But it might be safe to say that some historians in the jazz world don’t adequately explain just how much of an innovator he is. Lateef was one of the very first people to play modal post-bop — he certainly deserves as much credit as Miles Davis and John Coltrane in that area — and his world music-influenced experiments of the late ’50s were quite advanced for their time. Long after the ’50s, world music continued to fascinate Lateef — and it’s certainly a big part of what he does on In the Garden. Recorded live at the Electric Lodge in Venice, CA (a Los Angeles suburb) on March 1-2, 2003, In the Garden finds an 82-year-old Lateef leading a large ensemble that is mindful of African, Middle Eastern, and Asian music. Lateef not only plays the tenor sax on these performances — he’s also heard on a variety of flutes — and his sidemen play everything from flutes and clarinets to traditional string and percussion instruments from Africa and Asia. Those who are seriously into world music might recognize the sound of the Indian bansuri flute, or African udu drums, but even if you can’t pick out all the instruments, it is obvious that Lateef and his colleagues are thinking globally throughout this rewarding two-CD set. These performances tend to be abstract, sometimes drawing on free jazz. But those who are adventurous enough to go along for the ride will find a lot to enjoy about In the Garden. ~ Alex Henderson, Rovi Performers: Miles Shrewsbery – Frame Drum, Shaker, Tabla, Udu; Paul Sherman – Baroque Oboe, Horn (English), Oboe; Ralph Jones – Hichiriki, Bamboo Trumpet, Ney, Flute (Alto), Flute; Ralph Jones Band – Bamboo Trumpet, Hichiriki, Ney, Flute (Alto), Flute; Adam Rudolph – Overtone Flute, Cajon, Djembe, Balafon, Talking Drum, Hand Drums, Conga, Vocals; Andres Renteria – Bowls, Cajon, Bata, Shaker; Bennie Maupin – Bugle, Shakuhachi, Rainstick, Bamboo Flute, Flute (Alto), Clarinet (

Elements of Garden Design does what few gardening books do–it addresses the process of conceiving a whole garden, as opposed to a single element like color or a particular class of plant. Joe Eck explores the idea of a garden, and offers a practical approach to translating concepts such as “intention” and “harmony” into the solid forms of hedges and terraces, paths and rooms. Novice and experienced professional alike will find both food for thought and down-on-the-ground advice on such matters as creating child- and pet-friendly designs.

John Brookes is one of the most original and creative garden designers in the world. He is known for the more than 1,200 gardens he has designed worldwide and for being an inspiring teacher. His work teaching generations of garden designers has influenced the way we look at, and think about, gardens. This book is the summation of his philosophy. It is a supremely practical, easy-to-follow, and inspiring workbook. Brookes shows you exactly how to approach garden design. First, he gives you the basics of simple surveying, using his famous design grid. Then he gives you the tools and techniques you’ll need–how to work within the area of your site, how to use photography as an aid to garden design, how to select local plants and building materials to create a garden that looks very much at home in its setting. He shows you how to plan many kinds of gardens, large and small. He provides case studies of gardens and of garden features across the United States and Europe to show us how each has been planned and realized. And there’s a section on frequently asked questions–on subjects ranging from how to use gravel and the best techniques for making ponds and other water features to choosing appropriate materials for a terrace and finding a reliable contractor. His advice is easily applied and always useful. He shows us how to plot a garden with paper cutouts, how to keep the garden beautiful through all seasons, ways your garden can make the best use of your local climate, and how to weigh budget and space limitations against your garden "wish list." "The Essentials of Garden Design" is ideal for those who want to design or redesign their own gardens, those who want to be armed with lots of ideas and knowledge when working with garden designers they’ve hired, and those who want to become garden designers themselves. Brookes’s tremendous flair for communicating his mastery has always been one of his key strengths, and the enthusiasm, expertise, and clarity that have made his courses so popular around the world now make this book the essential course in garden design.

Purchase of this book includes free trial access to www.million-books.com where you can read more than a million books for free. This is an OCR edition with typos. Excerpt from book: CHAPTER III THE FORMAL GARDEN Continued It has been usual in dealing with gardens to include some account of the numerous Herbals which were published in England in the sixteenth and seventeenth centuries. Strictly speaking, these lie outside the scope of our subject; the Herbals are little more than catalogues raisonnees of the various fruits and flowers grown in England at the time, with notes on their medicinal qualities, and instructions as to the proper times and methods of planting. This has nothing to do with garden design. As, however, the distinction between garden design, horticulture, and botany was never very clearly made, we give the dates of the principal Herbals. Mr. Hazlitt gives a complete list of the bibliography of gardening, but, as will appear from the titles of the works there mentioned, for the next fifty years after Lawson’s book, nearly all the treatises which are not Herbalsdeal with horticulture.’ The Great Herbal, from the French, was first published in 1516; The Little Herbal, from the Latin, in 1525. Gary’s Book of the Properties of Herbs, and Macer’s Herbal were published about 1540; Ascham’s Little Herbal, 1550; Turner’s Herbal, 1551 to 1568; Lyte’s translation of Dodoens’s Herbal, 1578; John Gerard’s Herbal in 1597; John Parkinson’s well-known book, Paradisi in Sole Paradisus Terrestris, The Garden of Pleasure, was published in 1629. His Herbal on Theatre of Plants followed in 1640. Gerard had a famous physic garden in Holborn, near Ely Place, overlooking the Fleet. This was one of the earliest of the botanical gardens which reached such a high pitch of perfection in the latter half of the seventeenth century, as, for instance, the well-known Botanical Garden at Oxford which was founded and presented to the University by the Earl of Da…

This book offers the first comprehensive treatment of building rock gardens in all parts of North America. Topics covered include rock placement, materials, and planting and maintenance. Variations on the rock garden theme, from planting troughs to creating water features are also discussed. The book presents regional styles and techniques and profiles a dozen public rock gardens from Oregon to Newfoundland. More than 100 inspiring photos accompany the lively text.

Art and the Gardener: Fine Painting as Inspiration for Garden Design

Art and the Gardener: Fine Painting as Inspiration for Garden Design

$30.48

"The study of art is the most important study a garden designer can pursue." – Marco Polo Stufano In Art and the Gardener, Gordon Hayward’s tenth book on garden design, he makes a radical departure from his earlier approaches in order to explore elements of visual language across two artistic disciplines-fine painting and garden design-in hopes that the remarkable crosscurrents will help reveal how to design or simply appreciate your garden with greater acuity. In celebrating the visual language garden designers share with painters and artists such as Thomas Cole, Camille Pissarro, Piet Mondrian, Paul Cezanne, Claude Monet, Henri Matisse, Gustav Klimt, Vincent Van Gogh, and more, Hayward explains how to choose your garden style, the relationship between house and garden, the overall composition, specific design principles, roles trees play in the garden, color, and bringing it all together. Gordon Hayward is the author of several books, including The Welcoming Garden, Small Buildings, Small Gardens, The Intimate Garden: Twenty Years and Four Seasons in Our Garden, Garden Paths: Inspiring Designs and Practical Projects, and Your House, Your Garden: A Foolproof Approach to Garden Design, as well as a variety of articles for Horticulture Magazine. Gordon travels extensively across the country and in Europe, designing residential gardens and lecturing on various gardening topics. He lives in Westminster West, Vermont.

Designing a garden with the focus on flowers is missing half the fun, according to the author, an expert plantswoman and popular horticultural educator. Working on the premise that the form of the leaf is the most important design element, Glattstein explains the basic leaf shapes and how to balance them pleasingly. Color also adds dimension to plantings, and Glattstein includes individual chapters focusing on specific tonal palettes. Each chapter is filled with plant suggestions and hints for successfully incorporating foliage into the garden. More than 110 photographs illustrate foliage effects, from subtle to dramatic. This lively and information-rich book will benefit gardeners and landscape designers alike.

Internationally renowned expert Jean-Paul Pigeat sets out to examine both the enduring styles and the bold new trends in garden design. Pigeat juxtaposes traditional and contemporary garden designs, exploring their themes as expressions of a culture’s artistic creativity and social structure. Pigeat retraces his steps through famous and lesser-known gardens around the world-from Roman emperor Hadrian’s universalist Tivoli park to Middle Eastern water gardens, and from eighteenth-century British garden design to a modern-day lightning field. Each garden has something to teach about the history of garden design, from the ostentatious design of Versailles, where the sumptuous layout reflects the monarch’s power, to the inspired innovation of the Eden Project in England, which aims to teach visitors about the environment, our most precious resource; to the cutting-edge design of the Gas Works Park in Seattle, Washington, which reclaimed a former industrial site for the people of the city to enjoy. Lavishly illustrated, with a lush format and informative text this truly magnificent panorama of garden design will meet the expectations of professional, designers, and garden travelers alike.

From vegetable and succulent gardens to sculpture and rose gardens to mountain and waterfront gardens, New Garden Design covers a range of interpretations incorporating walls, fountains, pavilions, canals, pools, terraces and groves in unexpected ways. The resulting new garden is a pleasure garden vested with spiritual, symbolic and ecological intent. A modernist interpretation of Roman stone furniture and freestanding walls punctuate the space behind a 1970s ranch house. A home designed by Bernard Maybeck is accented with a freehand composition of urns, cement pipes and rusty objects, as well as over a thousand species of plants. A grove of olive trees underplanted with rosemary and lavender fields gives personality to two acres surrounding a house designed by modernist Mexican architect Ricardo Legorreta. Garden ideas spring from many sources, and new gardens today, abstract in design and with seemingly no connection to the formalities of a paradise garden or its Persian, Indian or Greco-Roman and Mediterranean antecedents, echoes them all. New Garden Design aims to show how many ancient lessons haven’t been forgotten. These gardens are fertile ground for creation, perception and meditation. Zahid Sardar is the design editor of the San Francisco Chronicle and has reported on garden, interior and architecture design for twenty years in the Bay Area. His work appears in Chronicle Magazine and other national and international design publications such as House & Garden, Western Interiors and Design, Elle Decor, Architecture, Metropolis, Elle Decoration and Schoner Wohnen magazines. He has designed, authored or contributed to several books on design and culture, including San Francisco Modern, Textile Arts of India, and Three Stories of the Raj. Room Outside: A New Approach to Garden Design

Room Outside: A New Approach to Garden Design

$47.98

This is a thoroughly revised and beautifully illustrated edition of the book that first made garden design accessible to everyone. In Room Outside John Brookes invented the highly practical concept of the garden, however large or small, as a usable extension of the home. That was nearly forty years ago and, while the range of products and materials has increased dramatically, the role the garden can play has not changed at all. Indeed, as a retreat from the hectic world of work and as an overflow to family life, our outdoor space has become incredibly important and Room Outside is even more relevant to 21st century living. John Brookes deals systematically with the creation of a contemporary garden whatever its size, from a tiny roof terrace to a substantial suburban plot. He sets the scene by exploring what we can learn from the evolution of garden design and use, and then asks the vital questions: ‘What do you want?’ and ‘What have you got?’ Then he brings together all the practical aspects

Your House, Your Garden: A Foolproof Approach to Garden Design

$7.48

Finally, homeowners can tackle new garden designs and fix old ones with the confidence and know-how to succeed. Professional garden designer Gordon Hayward provides the tools by demonstrating the guiding principles behind his own designs: take clues from the style, materials, and proportions of existing features, particularly your house, but also garages and outbuildings, property lines, streets, walls, and walkways. Look closely at these features, and they will suggest good design. Over sixty color photographs and over one hundred detailed watercolor sketches of Hayward’s plans for his clients show how to read the clues and then design gardens that relate to their surroundings and unify entire properties. Many tricks of the trade are given, including how to make inviting, sheltering entry gardens; screen unsightly features and utilities; and reclaim narrow, shady side yards. Surefire methods for designing front, side, and backyard gardens are explained.

The Artful Garden: Creative Inspiration for Landscape Design

"I want to put the mystery back into the heart of garden design, where it needs to be. It’s what lures you in through the gate, keeps you moving through the landscape, and fills you with excitement along the way. The sense of mystery is what turns a mere display of plants, paths, and ornaments into an adventure." –James van Sweden Guided by world-renowned landscape architect James van Sweden and horticulture expert Tom Christopher, any gardener can learn the secrets of the gardener’s art and absorb the essence of inspired garden design. In their gifted hands, creating your own perfect garden, with its own alluring mysteries, turns out to be not only easy but a delight. Whether it’s a ten-foot-square city terrace or a ten-acre expanse, the same principles apply: the intelligent use of positive and negative space, of form and scale, of light and shadow, of rough and smooth textures. Do you want a garden you can immerse yourself in? A garden you can smell and listen to as well as observe? An exuberant garden or a contemplative garden? In this elegantly written and visually stunning book, van Sweden reveals the secrets of famous gardens around the world and encourages you to find inspiration in the arts–in painting (from America’s classic regional artists to the abstract expressionists), music (from classical to jazz), sculpture, even dance. He introduces you to famous artists who share how their art has influenced the design of their own gardens, and teaches you to think not in terms of borders and beds or even paths and meadows but of a tapestry woven from sky, trees, rocks, vines, flowers, grasses, and space. Richly illustrated throughout with magnificent photographs, "The Artful Garden" both tells and shows, sharing with beginning and experienced gardeners a wealth of inspiration and practical help. "What’s my message?" van Sweden asks in conclusion. The wise answer: "Don’t squander the potential for surprise and wonder."" "This beautiful book guarantees everyone who reads it a priceless store of gardening wisdom.

From Art to Landscape: Unleashing Creativity in Garden Design

$30.48

Garden designers face some daunting questions: How do I begin the creative process? Where can I find design inspiration? How will I know if my design is successful? If you approach these questions like an artist, with an artist ‘s tools and ways of looking at the world, you will be able to design gardens that combine the unique character of a place with your innermost creative spirit. You ll make inspiring gardens that have real meaning, for yourself as well as others. In this luminous volume, landscape architect and artist W. Gary Smith explores the various means that artists use including drawing, painting, sculpture, meditation, poetry, and dance to create personal connections with the landscape that enrich and inform garden design. Part 1 focuses on simple techniques that anyone can use to nurture creativity, unleash the imagination, and get ideas down on paper. Part 2 shows how these techniques have shaped actual design projects with spectacular results. Throughout, the author ‘s friendly and encouraging voice removes the shroud of mystery surrounding the creative process and shows how even the least artistically inclined can tap into inner resources they never knew they had. Smith ‘s own exuberant sketches and bold paintings illuminate the path from art to landscape. Infectiously engaging and unfailingly inspiring, this eye-opening book deserves to be read and reread by anyone who aspires to master the rich and demanding art of garden design.

Excerpt from book: The True Landscape Mr. Blomfield writes nonsense, and then attributes it to me? that is to say, we go to Claude, and having saturated our minds with his rocks and trees, we return to Nature and try to worry her into a resemblance to Claude. I am never concerned with Claude, but seek the best expression I can secure of our beautiful English real landscapes, which are far finer than Claude’s. At least I never saw any painted landscape like them?say that from the Chestnut Walk at Shrubland, looking over the lovely Suffolk country. That is the precious heritage we have to keep. And that is where simple and pictuesquegardening will help us by making the garden a beautiful foreground for the true landscape, instead of cutting it off with a " high wall" or anything else that is ugly and needless. The lawns are not to be left in broad expanse, but to have Pampas Grasses, foreign shrubs, etc., dotted about on the surface. / have fought for years against the lawn-destruction by the terrace-builders and bedding-out gardeners But how are we to have our lawns in " broad expanse " if we build a high wall near the house to cut off even the possibility of a lawn ? This has been done in too many cases to the ruin of all good effect and repose, often to shut out as good landscapes as ever were painted There are flagrant cases in point to be found in private gardens in the suburbs of London. There is much bad and ignorant landscape work as there is bad building everywhere, but errors in that way aremore easily removed than mistakes in costly and aimless work in brick and stone. At Coombe Cottage, when I first saw its useless terrace wall shutting out the beautiful valley view from the living rooms, I spoke of the error that had been made, but the owner thought that, as it had cost…

Grounds for Review: The Garden Festival in Urban Planning and Design

Grounds for Review: The Garden Festival in Urban Planning and Design

$49.48

In recent decades, suburban growth and the decline of industry have left cities throughout Europe and America searching for creative and effective ways to revitalize blighted areas and reclaim underused land. In "Grounds for Review," Andrew Theokas examines one particularly exciting tool for reinvigorating urban areas: the garden festival. These festivals, which began in post-war Europe, have been popular throughout the Continent for decades but are just beginning to gain currency in the United States. A garden festival temporarily transforms a previously derelict area, such as an abandoned factory lot, into a festival of horticulture, combining luxurious landscapes with exhibits and carnival rides. Most garden festivals last about six months–during which time they draw millions of visitors–but the success of the fair itself is only the initial step in a detailed plan for urban improvement. At the conclusion of the festival, funds from its operation are used to transform the grounds once again, this time with an eye toward the long-term use of the land. The enduring result of a successful garden festival is thus the transformation of derelict land into a community asset, such as a new urban park or an affordable housing project. Theokas considers here fifteen garden festivals–in Europe, England, and the United States–in all their dimensions. He examines the role they play in stimulating urban redevelopment, their effects on the practice of landscape architecture, and the contentious debates over their financing, purposes, and future prospects. This highly illustrated volume will serve as a useful introduction to garden festivals for all those interested in urban planning, horticulture, and the future of cities.

Urban Garden Design: Private Terraces and Balconies

Urban Garden Design: Private Terraces and Balconies

$81.48

Landscaping is the design of open spaces through the use of live and inert elements as a way of transforming nature. The projects for gardens and residential landscapes, however, express a different complexity to their larger, public counterparts. Ideas such as privacy and concepts that take the family into account prevail over other considerations. The garden becomes another room of the house and is used on a daily basis. The projects presented in this book respond to a drastic renovation in what we understand to be traditional gardening. Research into materials, respect for the environment, spatial distribution and a profound knowledge of the flora are the concepts used to create these magnificent spaces.

Mirei Shigemori – Rebel in the Garden: Modern Japanese Landscape Architecture

$57.98

Mirei Shigemori decisively shaped the development of Japanese landscape architecture in the twentieth century. He founded the Kyoto Garden Society in 1932 and published the 26-volume Illustrated Book on the History of the Japanese Garden in 1938. One year later he designed his own first masterwork, the garden of the main hall of TAfuku-ji Temple. Between then and his death in 1975, he went on to design 240 gardens throughout Japan. Among the most famous are the Tenrai-an tea garden (1969) and the Matsuo Taisha garden (1975). All of his gardens are distinguished by the fact that they honor tradition while at the same time a " through their openness to Western modernity a " they free themselves from its weight and develop a language of their own. The first part of the book will deal with Shigemoria (TM)s life and influences, including his interest in ikebana and tea ceremonies. The second part will offer detailed presentations of some seventeen different gardens.

Design in the Plant Collector's Garden: From Chaos to Beauty

Design in the Plant Collector’s Garden: From Chaos to Beauty

$29.98

All gardeners love plants but if you love them too much the chances are you will end up with a plant collection rather than a garden. Help is at hand from confirmed plantaholic and architect Roger Turner, who describes how to indulge a passion for collecting plants without forfeiting the joys of a coherent, well-designed garden. Happily, the book prescribes little need to curb the excesses of plant addiction but simply recommends ways of focusing it to the advantage of all who share or visit your garden. Good collections need to be displayed well so that you can see them properly. The first part of the book looks at the structure of the garden as a whole, the balance of ‘empty space’ to ‘planted space’, the use of framing devices, and the value of paths in providing routes around the garden. At the heart of the book is a large section on plants that proposes ideas and solutions for making gardens with different types of plant collections. Here you will find schemes for displaying collections of trees from small groups to full-scale arboreta; recommendations for single-genus collections that look well planted together in one bed; and the ideal ‘space-holder’ plants that cover bare earth before prize bulbs emerge. Over 200 eye-catching and informative photographs highlight successful planting methods and illustrate the rewards to be gained from finding the perfect setting for a treasured plant. Plant enthusiasts, collectors and gardeners everywhere will unite in their enthusiasm for this practical book that provides the key to making beautiful gardens while keeping the spotlight on the plants.

The Boston Garden

The Boston Garden

$18.98

For seven decades, the Boston Garden functioned as both a de facto community center and the indoor entertainment hub of New England. Known to millions as the home of the Bruins and Celtics, the Garden was also home to a variety of other events. The Boston Garden was truly a "people’s palace," serving as a venue for events both grand and humble, monumental and mundane. It was nothing less than the city’s playpen, music hall, political clubhouse, tavern, cathedral, and living room. The Boston Garden opened on November 17, 1928, to an overflow audience who witnessed local boxer Dick "Honeyboy" Finnegan defeat reigning world featherweight champion Andre Routis in a non-title bout. Three days later, the Bruins greeted a crowd that fire department officials estimated was nearly four thousand above maximum capacity. The Boston Garden captures these moments and the unique relationship that was forged with the city right from the beginning. During the Great Depression, the Garden hosted countless community events, such as free public skating and religious services. It was Boston’s main attraction with concerts, wrestling, school sports, and the ever popular Bruins. Later years saw the birth of the Boston Celtics in 1946 and their unsurpassed record of sixteen world championships. Following World War II and through the baby boomer years, performers as diverse as Liberace, Elvis, and the Rolling Stones also packed fans in. The Boston Garden was demolished in 1998 to make room for the Central Artery and private development, but it lives on in the hearts of New Englanders.

Richly illustrated throughout with magnificent photographs, The Artful Garden both tells and shows, sharing with beginning and experienced gardeners a wealth of inspiration and practical help. “What’s my message?” van Sweden asks in conclusion. The wise answer: “Don’t squander the potential for surprise and wonder.” This beautiful book guarantees everyone who reads it a priceless store of gardening wisdom. From the Hardcover edition.

Excerpt: Autumn "HERBS OF GRACE" AND "DRAMS OF POISON" Rosemary and Rue ROSEMARY (Rosmarinus officinalis). Rosemary "delights in sea-spray," whence its name. "The cheerful Rosemary," as Spenser calls it, was in high favor in Shakespeare’s day. The plant was not only allowed a corner in the kitchen-garden; but it was trained over arbors and allowed to run over the mounds and banks pretty much at its own sweet will. "As for Rosemarie," said Sir Thomas More, "I let it run all over my garden walls, not only because my bees love it, but because it is the herb sacred t) remembrance, and, therefore, to friendship; whence a spray of it hath a dumb language that maketh it the chosen emblem at our funeral-wakes and in our burial-grounds." Ophelia handed a sprig of rosemary to her brother with the words: "There’s rosemary; That’s for re- 234 "A CURIOUS-KNOTTED GARDEN," VREDEMAN DE VRIES GARDEN WITH ARBOR5, VREDEMAN DE VRIES membrance; pray you, love, remember." Probably she knew the old song in the "Handful of Pleasant Delights" 1 where occurs the verse: Rosemary is for remembrance Between us day and night, Wishing that I might always have You present in my sight. Rosemary was used profusely at weddings among the decorations and the strewings on the floor. A sprig of it was always placed in the wine to insure the bride’s happiness. The herb was also conspicuous at funerals, naturally enough as the herb was emblematic of remembrance. The Friar in "Romeo and Juliet" exclaims: Dry up your tears and stick y…

The Modern Japanese Garden Modern Japanese Garden

The Modern Japanese Garden Modern Japanese Garden

$33.98

Japanese garden design, know to the West primarily in its traditional form, has undergone striking developments over the last decade. The Modern Japanese Garden is the first book to survey these contemporary Japanese gardens, presenting the designs in a way that is relevant to readers and their homes, whether it is in the East or West. Most of the locations have never been seen before in the West. In addition to important public gardens (such as that of the Tokyu Hotel Cerulean Tower, Shibuya) there are examples of some of the best modern domestic gardens. Among the more experimental gardens featured are a water garden with glass rocks; a mountain garden with flashing kinetic rods; a house with a vegetable roof garden; a rock plaza that pumps out mist; and a rock garden built inside a large inclined tube. With chapters exploring such themes as the influence on contemporary design of traditional Japanese cultural ideas, the miniaturization of landscape, sculpture, and texture, and the use by some garden designers of far more planting than was previously found in Japanese garden design, this inspirational book is required reading for all garden enthusiasts, especially those living in urban areas, as well as garden and landscape designers, and architects.

Excerpt from book: CHAPTER III THE HERBACEOUS BORDER1 The herbaceous border of perennial plants is, in all respects, the most interesting part of the garden, to the true lover of flowers. Especially is this so, to the owner of a small garden where there is room but for one good-sized border with a genial and kindly aspect. It is worth both trouble and thought to make of this border a harmony of flower and foliage through the greater part of the year. This result can only be attained through much striving, and many will be the alterations which experience will suggest from year to year. It is generally admitted that to work to a definite design in planting is extremely difficult. This difficulty is, of course, increased for a beginner, who has but a dim notion of what space his various plants will occupy when they are full grown. In making the plan, work on a large scale and rule it out into three or four foot squares in red ink, a salready recommended, and in planting 1 See Plan X. check the design by frequent measurements. Numbered pegs driven into the ground corresponding with numbered points on the plan would give a certain fixity to the gardener as he plants. It is most important that the planting be done under the superintendence, if not actually by, the designer himself. In preparing the ground, remember that it is undesirable that it should be frequently dug up, and, though fresh manure is not necessary in the top spit, if it be good soil, a heavy dressing should be placed in the bottom of the trench. The plants may then remain, with a minimum of disturbance, for several years. In heavy soils, it is well to prepare the border in the autumn and leave it fallow through the winter, with a rough and broken surface for the better admission of frost. In this case planting may be …

Excerpt from book: are worthy of cultivation. The common flax is sometimes found wild, but it is not a true, or at all events is a very doubtful, native. In the natural order Malvaceae, we have several showy plants, but none particularly worthy of garden cultivation, except it be Lavatera arborea (the Sea Lavatera), which is sparsely distributed along the south and west coasts, and on the Bass Rock in the Frith of Forth. It is a plant of vigorous habit and noble leaves, which might be used with advantage in what is nowadays called the subtropical garden, or, indeed, in almost any position, for it is a plant of very distinct habit. It grows five or six feet high when in a favourable situation. The best of the mallows is the Musk Mallow (M. moschata), which bears a profusion of rather showy flowers in summer. It is not an uncommon English plant, and would not discredit the mixed border. The Marsh Mallow (Althaea officinalis) will of course be cultivated for other reasons than its beauty, which is not very striking. The Marsh Mallow is found in the south of England, but does not go far north, nor is it very common, whereas the common mallow is to be seen everywhere, except perhaps in the extreme north. Among the Hypericums there is something to admire; indeed, nearly all of them possess some beauty, and might find a place among low shrubs; but by far the best is H. calycinum, or " St. John’s wort," a kind which is not perhaps truly British naturally, but which is to be seen in many gardens, and is now naturalized in several parts of England and Ireland in bushy places. The very large and showy flowers of this species, combined with its dwarf and neat habit, make it fit for a place in any garden, and it is particularly adapted for rough rockwork, or will crawl away freely under and near trees, …

Fielding Most of us have come under the spell of the charm of the old gardens in and about Rome, with their groves of cypress and ilex trees, their fountains and their statuary, all recalling the splendour of a bygone past,?delightful places in which to dream away the hot hours of the summer afternoons, to watch the sun slowly sinking, and flooding the desolate campagnawith colour as it sets, or in which to sketch such favourite " bits " as we wish to have a memento of.
