Know of a Designer in the Boston area?
I am looking for a landscape designer in the Boston area that has experience with designs that take dogs into consideration. I have rough idea of what I want to do but need assistance in finalizing the plan and in plant selection. I want plants that the dogs will not chew and are not toxic to dogs and I need to accommodate how hard they play in and around the plants.
Please email me with any suggestions.
www.peterrsadek.com He’s in Lakeville ( I don’t know where that is). I just saw him at the flower expo. Amazing work, but might be pricey.

Elements of Visual Design in the Landscape $64.48 What makes a visually appealing landscape? How can the design and use of a landscape be harmonized? These are just some of the questions tackled in this refreshing approach to the subject. In "Elements of Visual Design in the Landscape" the author explains a range of design principles. The book is profusely illustrated using both abstract and real examples taken from a wide range of international locations, together with cross references between related principles and case studies, demonstrating how principles can be applied to visually creative design and management. There is also a glossary for the terms that may be unfamiliar to those coming into design for the first time. Given the broad range of the book it will be an important guide for students on landscape, architecture, planning and design courses, and professionals will also find it an ideal source of ideas and applications. Home Plan Doctor: The Essential Companion for Anyone Buying a Home Design Plan $4.98 Every new house begins with a dream–and a home plan. For the buyer, it’s often a frightening proposition to commit a lifetime of savings to a two-dimensional drawing that’s difficult to interpret and challenging to visualize. Will the space meet the particular needs of the people who will call it home? Is the plan well designed? Will it, indeed, be the realization of the buyer’s dream, or does it hold the makings of a nightmare? Larry W. Garnett, a home plan designer for 30 years, knows the dilemma of the buyer. In "Home Plan Doctor" he makes basic design principles accessible to buyers, explaining in clear language how to navigate every stage of the process, from selecting a plan to evaluating the suitability of the design room-by-room, and, finally, requesting needed modifications. Using sample floor plans and watercolor illustrations from readily available plans, this book is a practical guide for everything from where to place the kitchen island for optimal traffic flow to how to evaluate the effect of the roof pitch on the overall proportions of the house. Garnett doesn’t overlook the basics either, with sections on what to look for in a building site, how to read a basic floor plan, and what to expect when you order the "blueprints," or construction documents. Whether purchasing a stock plan or working with an architect, every buyer of a design for a new home or addition will find this indispensable handbook worth the purchase price many times over — especially when that dream home is fully realized. |

Landscape and Building Design for Bushfire Areas $14.49 Shortlisted in TAFE Vocational Education category in the 2004 Australian Awards for Excellence in Educational Publishing. The devastation wreaked by bushfires on Australian homes and landscapes is an all too familiar scenario. Yet, why do we often see one house burn, whilst an apparently similar house on an adjacent block can endure? Research has shown that many factors affect the chances of a building surviving a bushfire. If you are designing landscapes and buildings in bushfire areas you need to be aware of these factors so that the chances of losses to life and property can be minimised. Landscape & Building Design for Bushfire Areas integrates the latest scientific knowledge about buildings and bushfires with a flexible design approach. The book contains two main sections: 1) Provides a clear description of what happens in a bushfire. It describes the environment in which bushfires occur, how a fire attacks, and how buildings are ignited and destroyed. 2) Sets out a practical design approach to the design of buildings and their immediate surroundings. It presents a range of options for designing the various elements of both landscapes and buildings in bushfire-prone areas. This book encourages design for bushfire to be included as a normal part of designing in bushfire-prone areas, rather than as an undesirable add-on. It will assist planning and building regulatory authorities to improve and administer regulatory requirements and guidelines. |

Brain Landscape $79.95 Brain Landscape: The Coexistence of Neuroscience and Architecture is the first book to serve as an intellectual bridge between architectural practice and neuroscience research. John P. Eberhard, founding President of the non-profit Academy of Neuroscience for Architecture, argues that increased funding, and the ability to think beyond the norm, will lead to a better understanding of how scientific research can change how we design, illuminate, and build spaces. Inversely, he posits that by better understanding the effects that buildings and places have on us, and our mental state, the better we may be able to understand how the human brain works. This book is devoted to describing architectural design criteria for schools, offices, laboratories, memorials, churches, and facilities for the aging, and then posing hypotheses about human experiences in such settings. |

Gang Chen takes you well beyond what you’ll learn in other books about basic principles like color, texture, and mass." -Jane Berger, Editor & Publisher of gardendesignonline "As a longtime consumer of gardening books, I am impressed with Gang Chen’s inclusion of new information on planting design theory for Chinese and Japanese gardens. Many gardening books discuss the beauty of Japanese gardens, and a few discuss the unique charms of Chinese gardens, but this one explains how Japanese and Chinese history, geography, and artistic traditions bear on the development of each country’s style. The material on traditional Western garden planting is thorough and inspiring, too. Planting Design Illustrated definitely rewards repeated reading and study; any garden designer will read it with profit." -Jan Whitner, Editor of the Washington Park Arboretum Bulletin "Enhanced with an annotated bibliography and informative appendices, Planting Design Illustrated offers an especially "reader friendly" and practical guide that makes it a very strongly recommended addition to personal, professional, academic, and community library Gardening & Landscaping reference collections and supplemental reading lists." -Midwest Book Review "Where to start? Planting Design Illustrated is, above all, fascinating and refreshing Not something the lay reader encounters every day, the book presents an unlikely topic in an easily digestible, easy to follow way. The Artful Garden: Creative Inspiration for Landscape Design $30.48 "I want to put the mystery back into the heart of garden design, where it needs to be. It’s what lures you in through the gate, keeps you moving through the landscape, and fills you with excitement along the way. The sense of mystery is what turns a mere display of plants, paths, and ornaments into an adventure." –James van Sweden Guided by world-renowned landscape architect James van Sweden and horticulture expert Tom Christopher, any gardener can learn the secrets of the gardener’s art and absorb the essence of inspired garden design. In their gifted hands, creating your own perfect garden, with its own alluring mysteries, turns out to be not only easy but a delight. Whether it’s a ten-foot-square city terrace or a ten-acre expanse, the same principles apply: the intelligent use of positive and negative space, of form and scale, of light and shadow, of rough and smooth textures. Do you want a garden you can immerse yourself in? A garden you can smell and listen to as well as observe? An exuberant garden or a contemplative garden? In this elegantly written and visually stunning book, van Sweden reveals the secrets of famous gardens around the world and encourages you to find inspiration in the arts–in painting (from America’s classic regional artists to the abstract expressionists), music (from classical to jazz), sculpture, even dance. He introduces you to famous artists who share how their art has influenced the design of their own gardens, and teaches you to think not in terms of borders and beds or even paths and meadows but of a tapestry woven from sky, trees, rocks, vines, flowers, grasses, and space. Richly illustrated throughout with magnificent photographs, "The Artful Garden" both tells and shows, sharing with beginning and experienced gardeners a wealth of inspiration and practical help. "What’s my message?" van Sweden asks in conclusion. The wise answer: "Don’t squander the potential for surprise and wonder."" "This beautiful book guarantees everyone who reads it a priceless store of gardening wisdom. |

Nature, Landscape, and Building for Sustainability: A Harvard Design Magazine Reader $22.48 The complexity and scale of the environmental problems confronting humanity today provoke a wide range of responses, from indifference to anger to creativity. Among a growing number of architects, landscape architects, and planners, however, these problems have inspired a new vision-sustainability-to guide their practices. In Nature, Landscape, and Building for Sustainability, " a diverse group of contributors considers the concept of sustainability, both philosophically and practically. Some take a broad view of the divisions between nature and humanity, exploring the incomprehensible scale of human intervention in the natural world, the relationship between how we feel" about nature and what we do" about it, and the commodification of the natural world. Other essays focus on sustainable design practices: sustainability’s roots in the American conservation tradition, its utility as a framework for future design practice, and the necessity of moving beyond demonstration projects into the mainstream. Together, these essays suggest that the gap between the promise and reality of sustainable design, although significant, can be bridged through diligence and practice. Contributors: D. Michelle Addington, Yale U; John Beardsley, Harvard Graduate School of Design; Albert Borgmann, U of Montana, Missoula; Peter Buchanan; Peter Del Tredici, Harvard Graduate School of Design; Robert France, Harvard Graduate School of Design; Susannah Hagan, U of East London; Kristina Hill, U of Virginia; Catherine Howett, U of Georgia; Niall Kirkwood, Harvard Graduate School of Design; Lucy R.
